Night vision electronics (NVE)
BMW Night Vision is an assist system for night vision. BMW Night Vision provides additional active safety in darkness, as does the High-Beam Assistant and Adaptive Headlight. With BMW Night Vision, the driver can better anticipate the road situation ahead at night and at dawn/dusk. Objects are detected at a range of 80 to 100 meters. The range depends on the weather conditions.
BMW Night Vision is based on far-infrared technology. The system detects the thermal radiation of objects.
Functional description
New: BMW Night Vision has an integrated person recognition system. Symbols are displayed in the central information display. The display of a symbol in the Head-Up Display (HUD) is also available. The Night Vision camera is not a control unit.
Because the Night Vision camera is essentially a military device, special measures are required for safety reasons.
- Entry of a special enabling code
- If a component is faulty or the vehicle is damaged, the Night Vision camera must be returned to the system supplier.
The night vision electronics (NVE) are installed on the support tube for the dashboard. The control unit has three processors for person recognition and communication within the vehicle electrical system.
The night vision electronics search for objects in the form of persons in the delivered image. It determines their position and distance. A symbol is displayed in the central information display (CID). The warning range ahead of the vehicle is determined based on the driving speed and steering angle.
BMW Night Vision can be switched on and off at the assist systems operating unit.
Structure and inner circuit
The Night Vision camera is activated, e.g. for diagnosis, via the Local CAN. The night vision electronics convert the symmetric video signals received from the Night Vision camera into a CVBS signal.
The night vision electronics are connected to the Night Vision camera via an LVDS data line and shielding.
Pin assignments
The graphic above shows only the supply and bus connection. The current pin assignment can be found on the BMW ISTA diagnosis system among the wiring diagrams. Click on the component code in the wiring diagram to activate the "Installation location" and "Pin assignment" tabs.
Nominal values
Observe the following setpoint values for the night vision electronics (NVE):
Size Value
Supply voltage 9 to 16 volts
Temperature range -40 to 85 °C
Diagnosis instructions
Failure of the component
If the communication to the night vision electronics fails, run the standard checks (global testing procedure). If there is an internal control unit fault, the following Behavior is to be expected:
- Fault entry in the night vision electronics (NVE)
- Check Control message in the instrument panel
