CHART C-12B-1

COOLANT FAN FUNCTIONAL CHECK

3.0L, "C" SERIES

The cooling fan on the "C" Series with 3.0L engine is a 2-speed, 150-watt system. It has a low speed, solid state relay that has an ECM control. The cooling fan will operate at low speed whenever the ignition is "ON" and the A/C select switch is set on A/C. The fan will go "OFF" when A/C is selected if TCC is also engaged.
The fan will go on high speed whenever engine coolant temperature exceeds approximately 108°C (226°F). This will occur regardless of A/C or TCC engagement.
With the heavy duty cooling option (V08), two fans are used. The second fan only operates when high speed is called for. With (V08), both fans run during high speed.

Fig. 031 - Chart C-12B-1 Coolant Fan Functional Check.:

1. Checks for shorts in relays or wiring. Normally fan would be "OFF".
2. Simulates coolant temperature switch closing. High speed fan(s) should be "ON".
Tests normal high speed fan operation when the coolant temperature switch closes. If hi-speed fan does not come "ON" prior to "hot light" or "hot zone" on temperature gauge, re-ground terminal "D" as in step 2 to assist engine cool down.
