CHART A-4

ENGINE CRANKS BUT WILL NOT RUN

1.8L "J" SERIES

FUEL INJECTION (PORT)

7. On 1986 1.8LT only, Check Cranking RPM. If "O" RPM, the ECM is not receiving reference signal. Review alternate procedure step 9A and check for an open or ground in CKT 430 or a faulty HEI module.
8. Check for open CKT 467 or 468 from connector to ECM. Be sure to reconnect injector harness.
9. With the voltmeter selector switch in the "AC" Volts position, and voltage scale swith in the 2 volts range. Voltage should be greater than .7 VAC and normally reads about 1.4 VAC.

If the voltage is less than .7 VAC there is an open or short to ground in HEI reference circuit 430. If the circuit is OK, there is a basic HEI problem.

9A. Alternate procedure. Disconnect distributor connector. Momentarily touch ECM side of connector. reference CRT 430, with a test light to 12 volts. Note injector as contact is made. Each time test light momentarily contacts CKT 430, the injector should "turn on". If injector "turn on", the ECM injector control circuit is OK. Connect tester and check for "spark". If spark is ok, it is a faulty HEI module, no spark indicates a basic HEI problem. See Chart C-4C.
