Bulletin: 85-10-14

Date: Jan. 1985

Ref.No.: 85-063-10
SUBJECT: INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER "POD" shake

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985 SOMERSET REGAL

IP Cluster Pod Reinforcement Brackets:

Cluster shake may be noted by some customers on early Somerset Regals. Two instrument cluster reinforcement brackets were added in production starting serial number FM425470 to reduce "pod" shake.

If a comment is received, the following reinforcements may be added to reduce shake: right reinforcement, part number 25525274 (step at top of bracket); and the left reinforcement, part number 25525273 are available from GMWDD. Both reinforcement must be added to reduce shake. Reinforcements should be installed behind the instrument panel pad assembly and secured to the cluster "pod" studs (See Figure). Stud nuts are to be torqued to 2 - 4 N-m (2 - 3 ft.lbs..).
The following procedure should be used to install the reinforcement brackets:

1. Disconnect battery.
2. Remove lower insulator panels.
3. Remove radio control unit.
4. Remove lower IP pad attachments.
5. Remove defroster and speaker grills.
6. Remove upper IP pad attachments.
7. Disconnect steering column attachments to IP bracket.
8. Pull IP pad assembly out far enough to remove defroster duct.
9. Remove defroster duct assembly.
10. Disconnect wiring as required to install reinforcement brackets.
11. Install reinforcement brackets and torque nuts to 2 - 4 N-m
12. Reverse installation procedure in steps 1 to 10.
13. Functional check operation and lighting of IP components distributed during repair.
