Condition
Some customers may comment that the instrument panel (IP) upper trim panel does not fit flush with the instrument panel assembly. This condition occurs most often at the front of the instrument panel near the base of the windshield or in front of the instrument panel glove box.
Cause
This condition may be caused by poor engagement of the IP upper trim panel retaining clips.
Correction
Caution
Use care when applying heat to the upper trim panel. Use only the minimum amount of heat required to allow the upper trim panel to reset back to the correct fit. Using excess heat will cause damage to the upper trim panel.
1. Push the upper trim panel down to engage the clip(s) that are not fully seated. You should hear and feel the clip engage. If the upper trim panel pops back up, push the clip back in and carefully apply heat using the J 25070 (heat gun) to allow the panel to reset back to the correct fit. If this does not correct the condition, proceed to Step 2.
2. Remove the IP upper trim panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel Replacement in SI. With the upper trim panel removed, identify the clip(s) (1) in the area that the upper trim panel is not flush.
3. Using a flat bladed tool (1), bend the retaining tabs out slightly to improve retention of the clips. Reinstall the upper trim panel.
4. If the upper trim panel still does not remain flush with the instrument panel assembly, replace the upper trim panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel Replacement in SI.
