Subject: Unique Replacement Procedure for Damaged RS Appearance Package Rocker Molding on Vehicles Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint B7100757

Models:
2011 Chevrolet Cruze
Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint B7100757
Equipped with RS Body Sport Kit (RPO BVG)

Condition

Due to a variation in the rocker panel sheet metal, the first 100 vehicles were built with rocker moldings that had to be retrofit to be installed. When servicing or replacing these rocker panel moldings, a unique service procedure is needed to ensure the fit and retention of the molding.

Cause

Due to the rocker molding attachment clips not matching the holes in the sheet metal, these rocker moldings had the original front and rear retaining clips trimmed off, and instead were retained by urethane at these locations.

Correction

For servicing a rocker panel molding on these specific vehicles, follow the repair procedure below:

Note
Ensure that the hoist/jack is properly positioned and does not impede fastener removal.

1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in SI.

2. Disengage the rocker molding retaining pins/clips, as possible. Refer to Rocker Panel Molding Replacement in SI.

Note
Using heat may help when pulling the rocker molding away from the sheet metal and accessing the urethaned areas.

3. Pull the original rocker molding loose and remove from the vehicle by cutting the molding away from the urethane at the front and rear ends. Use care when cutting the urethane to avoid any paint damage.

Important
Ensure any cleaning solvent is completely evaporated from the paint surface before installing the new rocker molding.

4. Clean any dirt/residue from the sheet metal surface using Kent Automotive Acrysol(TM), P/N 20005, or 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner, P/N 08984, or the equivalent.

5. Using side cutters, or equivalent, cut off the two standing attachment clips at the upper front and rear ends of the new rocker molding.

6. Use a razor blade scraper, or equivalent, to knock down any raised material and smooth out the surface.
7. Apply *Dow Betaprime 5404A primer, or equivalent, to the following bonding surface areas:

- To the front upper contour of the rocker molding.

- To the rear upper contour of the rocker molding.
- Any remaining urethane bead left on the sheet metal after the removal or the original rocker molding.

- If sheet metal was replaced, or if the holes were not filled with urethane previously, apply primer to the upper rectangular hole (1) at the front and rear of the sheet metal. The rear location is shown in the graphic above.

8. Once the primer is dry to manufacturer's specification, apply *Dow Betaseal U418 urethane adhesive, or equivalent, to the following areas:

- The front and rear primed areas on the rocker panel molding.

- The rectangular holes in the front fender and rear rocker sheet metal. The rear location is shown in the graphic above.

Note
Ensure to fit the rocker molding corner edge to the body line at the rear and front sheet metal. An example of a proper front fit is shown circled in the graphic above.

9. Starting at the rear and working forward, install the rocker molding by engaging the underside retainers, and rolling the ends upward. Once fit to the body lines, press the molding firmly against the sheet metal.

10. Apply masking tape to the front and rear urethane locations and let the urethane dry to full cure before the car is driven.
