DTC Descriptor
DTC C0161 04
- Antilock Braking System Brake Pedal Position Sensor Circuit Open Circuit

DTC C0161 0E
- Antilock Braking System Brake Pedal Position Sensor Circuit Resistance Below Threshold

Circuit/System Description

The body control module (BCM) monitors the brake pedal position sensor and sends a serial data message to the electronic brake control module (EBCM) when the brake pedal is applied. The EBCM monitors the brake pedal position along with the inputs from the brake Pedal Travel A, Pedal Travel B and Master Cylinder Pressure Sensor. The EBCM monitors conditions when the brake pressure is increasing and the vehicle slowing down, or when the vehicle is accelerating, and the brake pedal is not applied.

Conditions for Running the DTC

C0161 04
* Ignition ON
* The ignition voltage is greater than 10 volts.
* The brake pedal is applied.

C0161 0E
* Ignition ON
* The vehicle speed is greater than 15 km/h (9 mph).
* The ignition voltage is greater than 10 volts.
* The accelerator pedal position is greater than 20 percent.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

C0161 04

The brake pedal switch is not applied while the brake pressure sensor and travel sensor indicate the brake pedal is applied.

C0161 0E

The brake pedal switch is sensed as applied while the vehicle speed is greater than 15 km/h (9 mph).

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

A driver information center message and/or a warning indicator will not be displayed.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* A current DTC clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.
* The EBCM will turn OFF the indicator in the next ignition cycle.

Diagnostic Aids

The DTC C0161 can be set if the brake pedal is applied while accelerating or the brake pedal position sensor is out of adjustment.

Circuit/System Verification

Note: Diagnose all other brake light DTCs or Symptoms prior to performing this diagnostic procedure.

1. Ignition ON, verify that DTC C0277 or C029C is not set.

If DTC is set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle.

2. Ignition ON, observe the stop lamps while applying and releasing the brake pedal. Verify the stop lamps operate properly.

If the stop lamps do not operate properly, refer to Symptoms - Lighting Symptoms - Lighting.
