Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Balancing

Special Tools
* GE-48997 - A/C POE Oil Injector
* GE-39400-A - Halogen Leak Detector
* GE-45037-A - A/C Oil Injector

Draining Procedure

1. Remove the air conditioning and drive motor battery cooling compressor from the vehicle. Refer to Air Conditioning and Drive Motor Battery Cooling Compressor Replacement Air Conditioning and Drive Motor Battery Cooling Compressor Replacement.

Note: Drain and measure as much of the refrigerant oil as possible from the removed compressor.

2. Drain the oil from both the suction and discharge ports of the removed compressor into a clean, graduated container.
3. Measure and record the amount of oil drained from the removed compressor. This measurement will be used during installation of the replacement compressor.

Note: During the oil removal procedure, the condition of the oil should be evaluated. Compressor oil never breaks down unless something is wrong with the compressor or air conditioning (A/C) system. If one or more of the following conditions exist, replace the compressor and receiver dehydrator.

4. Inspect oil drained from the removed compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Diagnosis Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Diagnosis.
5. Properly discard the used POE refrigerant oil.

Balancing Procedure with Service Compressor Replacement (Flushing Not Required)

Note: The refrigerant oil in the A/C system must be balanced during compressor replacement.

The replacement compressor is shipped with 100 ml (3.4 oz) of refrigerant oil.

1. Before installing the compressor, calculate the total amount of oil drained from the compressor and collected by the recovery equipment.
2. If the amount drained and recorded is:

* LESS THAN 100 ml (3.4 oz), leave 100 ml (3.4 oz) in the replacement compressor. Do not drain the oil from the replacement compressor.
* MORE THAN 100 ml (3.4 oz), calculate the difference between the amount that was drained and recorded. ADD the calculated difference to the A/C system by filling the A/C compressor or using GE-45037-A - A/C Oil Injector along with GE-48997 - adapter.

Balancing Procedure with Service Compressor Replacement (Flushing Required)

1. Flush the A/C system. Flushing will remove all the oil from the A/C system. Refer to Flushing Flushing.
2. Remove the air conditioning and drive motor battery cooling compressor from the vehicle. Refer to Air Conditioning and Drive Motor Battery Cooling Compressor Replacement Air Conditioning and Drive Motor Battery Cooling Compressor Replacement.
The A/C system must be replenished with 150 ml (5.0 oz) of POE oil.
Note: The refrigerant oil in the A/C system must be balanced during compressor replacement.

The new service compressor is shipped with 100 ml (3.4 oz) of refrigerant oil. Do not drain the oil from the compressor.

3. Before installing the compressor, deduct the amount of oil shipped with the compressor 100 ml (3.4 oz) from the total amount of the system oil 180 ml (6.1 oz).
4. Add the calculated amount 80 ml (2.7 oz) of oil to the compressor and install it in the vehicle.

Balancing Procedure (Flushing Required Only)

3. Drain the oil from both the suction and discharge ports of the removed compressor into a clean, graduated container.

Note: The A/C system must be replenished with POE oil.

4. Add the total system capacity of POE oil 180 ml (6.1 oz) to the A/C system by filling the A/C compressor or using GE-45037-A - A/C Oil Injector along with GE-48997 - adapter.
5. Leak test the fittings of the component using the GE-39400-A - Halogen Leak Detector
