Transmission Replacement
Removal Procedure
Danger: Do not use a service jack to lift this vehicle. Lifting the vehicle with a jack could cause the vehicle to slip off the jack and roll; this could cause injury or death.
1. Place the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
Danger: Always perform the High Voltage Disabling procedure prior to servicing any High Voltage component or connection. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and proper procedures must be followed.
The High Voltage Disabling procedure will perform the following tasks:
* Identify how to disable high voltage.
* Identify how to test for the presence of high voltage.
* Identify condition under which high voltage is always present and personal protection equipment (PPE) and proper procedures must be followed.
Failure to follow the procedures exactly as written may result in serious injury or death.
2. Disable the high voltage system. Refer to High Voltage Disabling High Voltage Disabling.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
4. Remove the air cleaner resonator outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Resonator Outlet Duct Replacement Air Cleaner Resonator Outlet Duct Replacement.
5. Remove the drive motor generator module cover. Refer to Drive Motor Generator Power Inverter Module Cover Replacement Drive Motor Generator Power Inverter Module Cover Replacement.
6. Remove the front bumper fascia. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Removal and Installation Front Bumper Fascia Removal and Installation.
7. Using mechanics wire, secure the radiator assembly to the radiator core support.
8. Remove the three upper bell housing fasteners (1).
9. Remove the three phase cable fasteners (1) and reposition the cables.
10. Remove the 300 volt cable fasteners (1) and reposition the cables.
11. Press the locking tab (1) forward in order to release the transmission range selector lever cable (2) from the cable bracket.
12. Disconnect the transmission range selector lever cable terminal (1) from the transmission manual pin, then position the cable out of the way.
13. Remove the shift control cable bracket fasteners (1), then the bracket (2) from the transmission.
14. Remove the transmission fluid cooler inlet pipe fastener (1), then disconnect the inlet pipe (2) from the transmission.
15. Inside the passenger compartment, disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.

16. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
17. Remove the catalytic converter assembly (4) from the vehicle. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement Catalytic Converter Replacement.
18. Drain the transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Replacement Transmission Fluid Replacement.
19. Remove the heater inlet and outlet pipe to frame fasteners (1).
20. Remove the front wheelhouse liners. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Front Liner Replacement Front Wheelhouse Front Liner Replacement.
21. Remove the stabilizer link nuts (1) from the two front stabilizer links.
22. Disconnect the stabilizer links from the strut assemblies.
23. Disconnect the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.
Note: Do Not disconnect the brake hoses from the calipers.
24. Remove the front brake calipers from the caliper brackets, then suspend the calipers with mechanics wire to the body.
25. Disconnect the front steering knuckles from the strut assemblies. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement Service and Repair.
26. Remove the heater water auxiliary pump fasteners (1), then position the pump out of the way.
27. Disconnect the front left and right wheel speed sensor connectors (1).
28. Disconnect the right wheel drive shaft from the transmission, then suspend the wheel drive shaft with mechanics wire.
29. Disconnect the left wheel drive shaft from the front wheel drive intermediate shaft, then suspend the wheel drive shaft with mechanics wire.
30. Disconnect the rear transmission mount from the rear transmission bracket.
31. Remove the rear transmission mount bracket from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear.
32. Remove the front wheel drive intermediate shaft. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement.
33. Lower the vehicle.
34. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture Engine Support Fixture.
35. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler outlet pipe from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement.
36. Using suitable chains or straps, secure the front of the vehicle to the hoist arms.
37. Using a suitable engine support table or equivalent, lower the vehicle until the drivetrain and front suspension frame contacts the engine support table.
38. Remove the drivetrain and front suspension frame reinforcements (1) from the rear of the frame.
39. Remove the front drivetrain and front suspension retaining bolts.
Note: Slightly raise the vehicle, Do Not raise the vehicle too far or damage to Electrical Power Steering (EPS) wiring harness could occur.
40. Slightly raise the vehicle off of the frame to gain access to the EPS connectors.
41. Disconnect the EPS electrical connectors from the power steering gear assembly.
42. Raise the vehicle off the drivetrain and front suspension frame.
43. Position a suitable transmission jack under the transmission.
Warning
Handle with care, the transmission assembly weighs over 200 lbs. Bodily injury could occur if not handled properly.
44. Using a suitable straps or chains, secure the transmission to the transmission jack.
45. Disconnect the transmission electrical connectors from the transmission, then position the wiring harnesses out of the way.
46. Disconnect the ground strap from the rear of the transmission.
47. Disconnect the transmission cooler outlet pipe from the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement.
48. Remove the starter opening cover located below the intake manifold.
49. Remove the four torque dampener to flywheel bolts.
50. Remove the six lower transmission to engine fasteners (1).
51. Lower the transmission assembly from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
1. Position the transmission assembly in the vehicle.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
2. Install the six lower transmission to engine fasteners (1), then tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb ft).
3. Install the four torque dampener to flywheel bolts, then tighten to 62 Nm (46 lb ft).
4. Install the starter opening cover, then tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).
5. Connect the ground strap to the rear of the transmission.
6. Connect the transmission electrical connectors to the transmission.
7. Connect the transmission cooler outlet pipe to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement.
8. Remove the transmission jack from under the transmission.
9. Position the drivetrain and front suspension frame in the vehicle.
10. Install the four front drivetrain and front suspension frame retaining bolts, then tighten to the fasteners to 160 Nm (118 lb ft).
11. Install the drivetrain and front suspension frame reinforcements (1) to the rear of the frame, then tighten the reinforcement fasteners (2) to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).
12. Connect the EPS electrical connectors to the power steering gear assembly.
13. Connect the transmission fluid cooler outlet pipe to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement.
14. Install the front wheel drive intermediate shaft. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Replacement.
15. Install the catalytic converter assembly (4). Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement Catalytic Converter Replacement.
16. Connect the front steering knuckles to the strut assemblies. Refer to Steering Knuckle Replacement Service and Repair.
17. Connect the stabilizer link (1) to the strut assemblies. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement Service and Repair.
18. Install the front brake calipers to the caliper brackets. Refer to Step 2 of the installation procedure. Front Brake Caliper Replacement Front Brake Caliper Replacement.
19. Connect the outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.
20. Connect the front left and right wheel speed sensor connectors (1).
21. Install the heater water auxiliary pump fasteners (1), then tighten to the fasteners to 9 Nm (80 lb in).
22. Install the heater inlet and outlet pipe to frame fasteners (1), then tighten to the fasteners to 17 Nm (13 lb ft).
23. Install the rear transmission mount bracket to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement - Rear.
24. Connect the rear transmission mount to the rear transmission bracket.
25. Connect the right wheel drive shaft to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Replacement Transmission Rear Mount Replacement.
26. Connect the left wheel drive shaft to the front wheel drive intermediate shaft.
27. Install the front wheelhouse liners. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Front Liner Replacement Front Wheelhouse Front Liner Replacement.
28. Lower the vehicle.
29. Remove the chains or straps, securing the front of the vehicle to the hoist arms.
30. Remove the engine support fixture.
31. Install the transmission mount bracket to the transmission. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side.
32. Remove the engine support fixture.
33. Install the three upper bell housing fasteners (1), then tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb ft).
34. Install the transmission fluid cooler inlet pipe to the transmission then tighten the fastener (1) to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).
35. Fill the transmission with transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Replacement Transmission Fluid Replacement.
36. Install the shift control cable bracket to the transmission, then tighten the fasteners (1) to 22 Nm (16 lb ft).
37. Connect the transmission range selector lever cable terminal (1) to the transmission manual pin.
38. Press the locking tab (1) rearward in order to lock the transmission range selector lever cable (2) to the cable bracket.
39. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.
40. Install the three phase cables, then tighten the fasteners (1) to 9 Nm (80 lb in).
41. Install the 300 volt cables, then tighten the fasteners (1) to 9 Nm (80 lb in).
42. Install the front bumper fascia. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Removal and Installation Front Bumper Fascia Removal and Installation.
43. Install the front wheelhouse liners. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Front Liner Replacement Front Wheelhouse Front Liner Replacement.
44. Install the front tire and wheels on the vehicle. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation Service and Repair.
45. Remove the mechanics wire securing the radiator assembly to the radiator core support.
46. Install the air cleaner resonator outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Resonator Outlet Duct Replacement Air Cleaner Resonator Outlet Duct Replacement.
47. Install the drive motor generator module cover. Refer to Drive Motor Generator Power Inverter Module Cover Replacement Drive Motor Generator Power Inverter Module Cover Replacement.
48. Enable the high voltage system. Refer to High Voltage Enabling High Voltage Enabling.
49. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.
