Circuit/System Description
The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor 2 is integrated with the intake manifold pressure sensor. The IAT sensor 2 is a variable resistor that measures the temperature of the air after the charge air cooler in the intake manifold. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the IAT sensor 2 signal circuit and a ground for the low reference circuit.
Conditions for Running the DTC
P0096
* DTCs P0097, P0098, P0112, P0113, P0117, or P0118 are not set. The ignition is OFF for 8 h.
* The ignition is ON or the engine is running.
* DTC P0096 run continuously when the above condition is met.
P0097 or P0098
* The engine is running.
* The ignition is ON or the engine is running.
* The DTCs run continuously when the above condition is met.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
P0096
* After the ignition has been OFF for 8 h or greater the ECM detects that the difference between IAT sensor 1 and IAT sensor 2 is greater than 20°C (68°F).
and
* At the engine start, the engine control module determines the absolute temperature difference between the ECT signal and the IAT Sensor 1 signal is more than the absolute temperature difference between the ECT signal and the IAT Sensor 2 signal.
P0097
The ECM detects that the IAT sensor 2 is warmer than 150°C (302°F) for greater than 4 s.
P0098
The ECM detects that the IAT sensor 2 is colder than -39°C (-38°F) for greater than 4 s.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTC P0096, P0097, P0098 are Type B DTCs.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTC P0096, P0097, P0098 are Type B DTCs.
Diagnostic Aids
Depending on the output from the intake manifold pressure, an IAT sensor 2 signal circuit that is shorted to the intake manifold pressure sensor signal circuit may cause the IAT Sensor 2 parameter response to be erratic or become stuck at a given value.

Circuit/System Verification
Note:
* Perform step 1 of this verification procedure only if the engine has been OFF for 8 h or more.
* The vehicle sitting in direct sun light or having the block heater ON will skew the results.
1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool parameters list below. The readings should be within 19°C (34°F) of each sensor.
* IAT Sensor 1
* Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
* IAT Sensor 2
2. Engine idling, verify the appropriate scan tool parameters are within the specified ranges. The readings depend on the current ambient temperature and the vehicle operating conditions.
* -39 to +149°C (-38 to +300°F); IAT Sensor 1
* -39 to +120°C (-38 to +248°F); Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
* -39 to +142°C (-38 to +288°F); IAT Sensor 2
3. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the freeze frame/failure records data.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B65 Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature Sensor.
2. Ignition OFF, all vehicles systems OFF. This may take up to for 2 min. Test for less than 5 ohm between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
• If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
3. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool IAT Sensor 2 parameter is colder than -39°C (-38°F).
• If warmer than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal 2 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
4. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground. Verify the scan tool IAT Sensor 2 parameter is warmer than 130°C (266°F).
• If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
5. If the circuits test normal, test or replace the B65 Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature Sensor.
Component Testing
Dynamic Test
1. Ignition OFF, remove the B65 Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature Sensor and B74 Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor.
Note: A thermometer can be used to test the sensor off vehicle.
2. Test the B65 Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature Sensor by varying the sensor temperature while monitoring the sensor resistance. Compare the readings with the Temperature Versus Resistance Temperature Versus Resistance. The resistance values should be in range of the table values.
