Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Column Jacket Replacement (Manual)

J 21854-01 - Pivot Pin Remover

Removal Procedure

Warning: Refer to SIR Warning SIR Warning.


1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Service and Repair.

2. Remove the steering column assembly. Refer to Steering Column Replacement Steering Column Replacement.

3. Remove the turn signal switch bracket. Refer to Turn Signal Switch Bracket Replacement Turn Signal Switch Bracket Replacement.

4. Remove the steering column tilt spring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement (Manual) Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement (Manual)Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement (Telescoping) Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement (Telescoping).




5. Remove the steering wheel position sensor retainer (1).

6. Remove the steering wheel position sensor (2).

7. Remove the steering wheel position sensor retainer (3).




8. Remove the 2 pivot pins (1) from the steering column support assembly using J 21854-01 - pivot pin remover (2).




9. Disengage the steering column lock shoes from the dowel pins in the steering column tilt head housing assembly (1).

10. Remove the steering column tilt head housing assembly (1) with the steering shaft assembly from the column jacket assembly.




11. Remove the steering shaft assembly (1) from the steering column tilt head housing assembly (2).

Installation Procedure




1. Install the steering shaft assembly (1) into the steering column tilt head housing assembly (2).




2. Install the steering column tilt head housing assembly (1) and the steering shaft assembly into to the column jacket assembly.





Note: Replace the steering column support assembly if the steering column support assembly has been staked 3 times.

3. Install the 2 pivot pins (1) to the steering column support assembly.

4. Stake each pivot pin (1) in 3 spots as shown.




5. Install the steering wheel position sensor retainer (3).

6. Install the steering wheel position sensor (2).

7. Install the steering wheel position sensor retainer (1).

8. Install the steering column tilt spring. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement (Manual) Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement (Manual)Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement (Telescoping) Steering Column Tilt Spring Replacement (Telescoping).

Warning: Refer to SIR Inflator Module Coil Warning SIR Inflator Module Coil Warning.


9. Install the turn signal switch bracket. Refer to Turn Signal Switch Bracket Replacement Turn Signal Switch Bracket Replacement.

10. Install the steering column assembly. Refer to Steering Column Replacement Steering Column Replacement.

11. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling Service and Repair.
