Starter Motor: Service and Repair




Starter Replacement (1.4L LUV)

Removal Procedure

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.

2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.

3. If equipped, remove the front compartment splash shield. Refer to Front Compartment Insulator Replacement .

4. If equipped, remove the engine shield. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement .




5. Remove the starter and generator positive cable nut (2).

6. Remove the starter and generator positive cable (1).

7. Remove the starter positive cable nut (3).

8. Remove the starter positive cable (4) from the starter.

9. Remove the starter ground cable nut (5).

10. Remove the ground cable (6).




11. Remove the upper starter bolt (2) and the washer (1).

12. Remove the starter bolt stud (4) and the washer (5).

13. Remove the starter (3).

Installation Procedure




1. Install the starter (3).

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

2. Install the washer (5) and the starter bolt stud (4) and tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).

3. Install the upper starter bolt (2) and the washer (1) and tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).




4. Install the ground cable (6).

5. Install the starter ground cable nut (5) and tighten to 12.5 Nm (111 lb in).

6. Install the starter positive cable (4) to starter.

7. Install the starter positive cable nut (3) and tighten.

8. Install the starter and generator positive cable (1).

9. Remove the starter and generator positive cable nut (2) and tighten to 12.5 Nm (111 lb in).

10. If equipped, remove the front compartment splash shield. Refer to Front Compartment Insulator Replacement .

11. If equipped, remove the engine shield. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement .

12. Lower the vehicle.

13. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection.

14. Close the hood.
