Recall - Brake Pipe Rerouting

Number: 83C13

Section: 5

Date: October, 1983

Subject: PRODUCT SAFETY CAMPAIGN 83C13 BRAKE PIPE TO AIR CLEANER RESONATOR BRACKET INTERFERENCE - 1983 CHEVROLET MALIBU, EL CAMINO AND MONTE CARLO MODELS EQUIPPED WITH 5.7 LITER V8 DIESEL ENGINES

TO: ALL INVOLVED CHEVROLET DEALERS

The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, as amended, provides that each vehicle which is subject to a recall campaign of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair. A failure to adequately repair within 60 days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the owner may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation.

To avoid having to provide these burdensome solutions, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each owner and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. As you will see in reading the attached copy of the letter which is being sent to owners, the owners are being instructed to contact the nearest Chevrolet Zone Office if their dealer does not remedy the condition within five days of the agreed service date. If the condition is not remedied within a reasonable time, they are instructed how to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

DEFECT INVOLVED

General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1983 Chevrolet Malibu, El Camino and Monte Carlo Model Cars equipped with 5.7 liter V8 diesel engines. The rear brake master cylinder brake pipe may rub on the air cleaner resonator bracket. Over an extended period of operation, the brake pipe could wear through, resulting in a brake fluid leak and loss of the rear brakes. These vehicles are equipped with dual braking systems; part of the system will still work and allow the vehicle to be stopped, but over a greater distance. Loss of rear braking at a time when minimum stopping distance is required could result in a vehicle crash without prior warning.

DEALER ACTION

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring on vehicles involved, dealers are to make sure there is a minimum of 19 mm (3/4 inch) clearance between the brake pipe and resonator bracket, if there is not, they must reposition pipe to provide this clearance.
DEALER ACTION (CONT'D)

Also, if the pipe is worn due to contacting the bracket, the pipe is to be replaced.

Involved vehicles have been identified by vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.

These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin was not shipped any involved vehicles.

Notification Used by Chevrolet Motor Division
Dear Chevrolet Owner:

General Motors has determined that some 1984 C/K 10-20, G20 and S/T 10 Model Chevrolet Trucks equipped with a 700 R4 automatic transmission (RPO MXO) may have been assembled without a throttle valve bushing in the transmission valve body. A missing bushing can cause erratic shifting. If the transmission continues to be operated in this condition, it could result in premature transmission failure.

To correct this condition on your vehicle, your Chevrolet Dealer will inspect the transmission and if necessary, replace the valve body. This service will be completed for you at no charge

Instructions for this service have been sent to your Chevrolet Dealer. The labor time to inspect your vehicle is approximately 15 minutes. If the valve body must be replaced, it will take about 1-1/2 hours. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much additional time will be needed to process your vehicle.

The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction in the shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please complete the postage paid reply card and return it to us.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.
