CABALLERO & EL CAMINO
Column Shift
1. Place shift lever in ``Reverse'' position and ignition switch in ``Lock.''
2. Raise vehicle on a hoist.
3. Loosen shift control rod swivel lock nuts. Pull down slightly on 1/R rod attached to column lever to remove any slack and then tighten clevis lock nut at transmission lever, Fig. 4.
4. Unlock ignition switch and shift column lever to ``Neutral.'' Position column lower levers in ``Neutral,'' align gauge holes in levers and insert gauge pin.
5. Support rod and swivel to prevent movement and tighten 2---3 shift control rod locknut.
6. Remove alignment tool from column lower levers and check operation. Then place column lever in ``Reverse'' and check interlock control.

Floor Shift
1. Place ignition switch in ``Off'' position and raise vehicle.
2. Loosen locknuts at shift rod swivels, Fig. 5. The rods should pass freely through the swivels.
3. Place transmission shift levers in neutral position.
4. Move shift control lever into the neutral detent position, align control assembly levers and insert gage pin into lever alignment slot.
5. Tighten locknuts at shift rod swivels and remove gage pin.
6. Place transmission control lever in reverse position and the ignition switch in ``Lock'' position. Loosen lock nut at back-drive control rod swivel, then pull rod downward slightly to remove slack in the column mechanism, then tighten the locknut.
7. Check interlock control. The ignition switch should move freely to and from the ``Lock'' position.
8. Check transmission shift operation and if satisfactory, lower vehicle.
