Oil Pump: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Remove cam cover, distributor assembly and oil pan.
2. Remove bolt securing oil pickup tube to engine block and the tube from the oil pump.
3. Remove oil pump mounting bolts, then the oil pump.
4. Remove rubber hose and relief valve assembly from the pump.

INSPECTION

1. Measure clearance between drive rotor and driven rotor with a feeler gauge, Fig. 18. If clearance is greater than .0079 inch, replace oil pump assembly.
2. Measure clearance between driven rotor and inner wall of pump body, Fig. 18. If clearance is greater than .0098 inch, replace oil pump assembly.
3. Measure clearance between drive rotor, driven rotor and oil pump cover with a feeler gauge and a straightedge, Fig. 18. If clearance is greater than .0079 inch, replace oil pump assembly.
4. Determine clearance between drive shaft and drive shaft hole in pump cover. Measure the inside diameter of the shaft hole in the cover and the diameter of the drive shaft. Subtract the drive shaft diameter from the inside diameter of the shaft hole. If the clearance is greater than .0098 inch, replace oil pump.
5. Inspect components for wear or damage.

INSTALLATION

1. Align mark on camshaft with mark on No. 1 rocker arm shaft bracket. Align notch on crankshaft pulley with ``O'' mark on front cover. When these two sets of marks are properly aligned, No. 4 piston is at top dead center, compression stroke.
2. Install driven rotor with alignment mark aligned with mark on drive rotor. Fig. 19.
3. Engage oil pump drive gear with pinion gear on crankshaft so alignment mark on drive gear is turned rearward and approximately 20° from the crankshaft in a clockwise direction, Fig. 20.
4. Ensure oil pump drive gear is turned rearward as viewed from clearance between front cover and cylinder block and the slit at the end of the oil pump drive shaft is parallel with the front face of the cylinder block and is offset forward as viewed through the distributor fitting hole, Fig. 11.
5. Install oil pump cover and mounting bolts.
6. Install relief valve assembly and rubber hose on cover.
7. Connect oil pickup tube to rubber hose and secure tube to cylinder block.
8. Install oil pan and cam cover.
9. Install distributor so boss on shaft is fitted into slit at end of oil pump drive shaft.
10. Refill engine oil and check for leaks.
