M/T - Driveline Vibration

Number: 83-T-40

Section: VIIb

Date: April, 1983
Subject: DRIVELINE VIBRATION - 1982 AND

EARLY 1983 "S" TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH FOUR AND FIVE SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS AND LR2 (1982 ONLY) AND LQ2 (1983 ONLY) ENGINE
TO: ALL CHEVROLET DEALERS

Some 1982 and early production 1983 "S" trucks may exhibit a driveline vibration or audible. The vibration or audible generally occurs in the engine RPM range of 1700 to 2200. The condition may be accompanied by an instrument panel buzz. The condition is limited to vehicles with the following driveline combinations.

Model
Year Manual Transmission Type Engine

1982 4-Speed (M77) and 5-Speed (MB6) V6 - 2.8L (LR2)
1983 4-Speed (M77) and 5-Speed (MB6) LR - 2.0L (LQ2)

A "tuned" transmission damper assembly, P/N 14073312, has been released in order to reduce the vibration or audible. Figure 1 and 2 are used to illustrate the installation of the damper.
1982 Vehicles

Longer transmission mount to transmission retainer bolts, P/N 11504597 (standard part), must be used when installing the damper on all applicable 1982 vehicles.

1983 Vehicles

The original transmission mount and associated parts must be replaced when installing the damper on all applicable 1983 vehicles produced before the damper was available. Figure 2-A shows those parts which are to be discarded. Install the damper assembly using the parts listed below. The installation
is shown in Figure 2-B. The transmission support member is already slotted to accommodate the dual captive stud mounting feature of the new mount assembly.

Parts for 1983 Vehicles

14027910 Mount Assembly
11504597 Retainer Bolts (Standard Part)
3790768 Washers (Standard Part)

Finalize each installation by torquing the retainer bolts to 54-65 N-m (40-43 ft.lbs.) and the torque-prevailing nuts to 28-38 N-m (21-28 ft.lbs.).

Prior to reuse, clean and inspect the torque-prevailing nuts for damage. Replace nut with P/N 11501033 (standard part) if necessary.
