Poor paint adhesion accompanied by corrosion may be evident on the lift gate moldings of some 1983-84 "S/T" blazers. These black painted parts blister on the bottom exterior surface of the molding strip. In some cases, the upper molding section and the surfaces on the interior of the vehicle may also show signs of paint blistering.
To repair vehicles in the field experiencing this condition, it will be necessary to refinish the affected moldings.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTICE: Moldings cannot be removed from the glass assembly. Care should be used to insure that the glass is not damaged during this repair and that surrounding areas not affected are properly covered and masked.
1. Clean the affected moldings with a grease and wax remover (DuPont 3919 Prep-Sol or equivalent).
2. Remove the paint down to bare metal at the areas where corrosion or paint blistering has occurred. Be sure to sand beyond these areas to insure that all oxidation is removed. The lip surface on the upper edge of the bottom molding must also be carefully prepared and painted.
3. Featheredge the paint along the surface of the entire molding using standard paint preparation procedures.
4. Metal prep the bare metal thoroughly (DuPont 5717 metal conditioner or equivalent). Avoid contact of metal conditioner with painted surface.
5. Mask off the surrounding area and spray molding with an epoxy zinc chromate primer (DuPont 8255 or equivalent).
6. Sand primer on total affected molding, using 360 grid dry followed by 400 grit dry.
7. Paint the entire affected molding using an acrylic enamel (DuPont Centari (R) or equivalent) Fisher Code WA 30, black 30~. Refer to Chart A for refinish numbers.
