With Leading/Training Brakes
For additional information see Notes, Warnings, and Hints. Fundamentals and BasicsExploded View Of Drum Brake Assembly.:
1. Install parking brake lever to shoe with spring washer, pin and retaining ring. Ensure concave side of washer faces parking brake lever.
2. Install adjuster pin into shoe.
NOTICE: Pin must project 6.8-7.0 mm (0.268-.276 inch) from side of shoe where adjuster actuator is installed.
3. Apply suitable lubricant to threads of adjuster screw, inside diameter of socket and socket face.
4. Position brake shoes on a clean, flat surface, then install upper return spring to shoes.
CAUTION: The spring must not be stretched to a length exceeding 8.04 inches.
NOTE: For additional information see Brake Spring Removal and Installation Notes. Fundamentals and Basics
5. Install adjusting screw assembly between shoes. Ensure screw properly engages adjuster shoe and parking brake lever.
NOTICE: The spring clip must be installed toward the backing plate.
6. Apply a thin coat of white lithium grease or equivalent to shoe pads.
7. Install shoe and lining assemblies, upper return spring and adjusting screw assembly over axle and behind axle flange, then into backing plate, noting the following:
a. Use care to avoid damaging wheel cylinder boots.
b. Overlap lower portion of shoes to enable upper ends of shoes to clear boots on wheel cylinder.
c. Ensure upper ends of shoes are resting on ends of wheel cylinder pistons.
d. Do not position lower ends of shoes under anchor plate until lower return spring is installed.
e. Do not stretch lower return spring to a length exceeding 4.22 inches.
8. Position ends of shoe and lining assemblies together over anchor plate, then hook lower return spring into shoe web holes.
9. Spread lower ends of shoe and lining assemblies until they clear anchor plate, then position shoes against backing plate and release them.
10. Engage spring in groove at bottom of anchor plate.
11. Install hold-down springs and spring assemblies.
12. Position adjuster actuator over end of adjuster pin, ensuring top leg properly engages notch in adjuster screw.
13. Install actuator spring, ensuring free end of actuator engages notch in adjuster nut.
CAUTION: Do not stretch actuator spring to a length exceeding 83 mm (3.27 in).

14. Using suitable brake drum to shoe gauge, Fig. 7, measure brake drum inside diameter. Adjust brake shoes to dimension obtained on outside portion of gauge, Fig. 8.
15. Connect parking brake cable to brake lever.
16. Install brake drum, tire and wheel assembly.
17. If any hydraulic connections have been opened, bleed brake system.
18. Adjust parking brake. Refer to ADJUSTMENTS Adjustments
19. Inspect all hydraulic lines and connections for leakage and repair as necessary.
20. Check master cylinder fluid level and replenish as necessary.
21. Check brake pedal for proper feel and return.
22. Lower vehicle and road test.
CAUTION: Do not severely apply brakes immediately after installation of new brake linings or permanent damage may occur to linings. Brakes must be applied moderately during first several hundred miles of operation to ensure proper burnishing of linings.
