Camshaft: Service and Repair

CAMSHAFT
Depending on vehicle and engine application, the grille, radiator and condenser, if equipped, must be removed to facilitate camshaft removal.

Removal(C/K Models)
1. Remove intake manifold. Service and Repair
2. Remove valve lifters. Service and Repair
3. Remove crankcase front cover. Service and Repair
4. Remove fuel pump and push rod. Complete camshaft removal as follows:
- Sprocket is a light fit on camshaft. If sprocket does not come off easily a light blow on the lower edge of the sprocket (with a plastic mallet) should dislodge the sprocket.

4. Install two 5/16" - 18 x 4" bolts in camshaft bolt holes then remove camshaft.

NOTICE: All camshaft journals are the same diameter and care must be used in removing camshaft to avoid damage to bearings.

1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
2. Drain coolant.
3. Remove air cleaner.
4. Remove fan assembly.
5. Remove fan shroud.
6. Disconnect radiator hoses. If equipped with auto, disconnect oil cooler lines.
7. Remove radiator.
8. Remove generator at generator bracket.
9. Disconnect spark plug wires on one side, remove distributor cap and lay aside.
10. Disconnect wires, hoses, accelerator cable, and wiring harness at valve covers.
11. Disconnect heater hoses at intake and water pump.
12. Remove fuel line.
13. Remove water pump.
14. Remove crankshaft pulley.
15. Remove torsional damper.
16. Remove distributor.
17. Remove rocker arm covers as previously outlined.
18. Remove intake manifold as previously outlined.
19. Remove pushrods as previously outlined.
20. Remove lifters as previously outlined.
21. Remove fuel pump.
22. Remove front cover.
23. Align crankshaft and camshaft.
24. Remove crankshaft gear and timing chain.
25. Remove motor mount through bolts.
26. Lift engine with floor jack.
27. Remove camshaft.

Inspection
The camshaft bearing journals should be measured with a micrometer for an out-of-round condition. If the journals exceed .001" (.025mm) out-of-round, the camshaft should be replaced.

Installation
Whenever a new camshaft is installed coa camshaft lobes with "Molykote" or its equivalent.
Whenever a new camshaft is installed replacement of all valve lifters oil filter and engine oil is recommended to insure durability of the camshaft lobes and lifter feet.
1. Lubricate camshaft journals with engine oil an install camshaft.
2. Lower engine.

3. Install timing chain on camshaft sprocket. Hold the sprocket vertically with the chain hanging down and align marks on camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
4. Align dowel in camshaft with dowel hole in camshaft sprocket then install sprocket on camshaft.
5. Draw the camshaft sprocket onto camshaft using the mounting bolts. Torque to specifications.
6. Lubricate timing chain with engine oil.
7. Install fuel pump push rod and fuel pump.
8. Install crankcase front cover Service and Repair.
9. Install valve lifters. Service and Repair
10. Install Intake manifold. Service and Repair
