Assemble

1. Install new selector shaft seal in case. install selector shaft from outside of case with identification groove on outside of case, then install spring pin into case to secure shaft Ensure that shaft rotates freely.

2. Install inside selector lever and parking pawl actuator rod assembly, then install electrical connector with new O-ring.

3. Place transmission case so front is facing upward.

4. Install thrust washer and bearing, then band. Where assembly lube is required, use Transjel J 36850 or equivalent. Do not use grease. Use assembly lube to center and secure bearing over case bushing.

5. Install reaction sun gear and drum assembly, then bearing and thrust washer. Secure bearing with assembly lube.

6. Install output shaft and planetary carrier assembly into case, then install and secure thrust washer and bearing with assembly lube.

7. Align second clutch drive plates in second clutch drum. Install third clutch drum and input shaft assembly into second clutch drum, seating third clutch drum splines into second clutch plate splines.

8. Install second and third clutch assemblies into case.

9. Install aluminum pressure plate into case with flat side facing up, ensuring the lug on the plate engages with one of the narrow notches in the case.

10. Lubricate with automatic transmission fluid and install reverse clutch plates, beginning with a steel plate, then alternating composition and steel plates.

11. Install reverse clutch cushion plate (wave washer) into case, ensuring that lugs engage narrow notches in case.

12. Mount tool No. J 23085, on case flange and against input shaft to determine oil pump hub-to-second clutch thrust washer thickness. Loosen thumb screw to allow inner shaft to drop onto second clutch drum. Tighten thumb screw and remove tool from transmission. Compare thickness of selective washer removed from transmission to gap "A." Select and install a washer that is equal to or slightly less than the inner
shaft protrusion of "A" in order to obtain the correct endplay of 0.014 to 0.031 inch. Secure with assembly lube.

13. Install new pump to case gasket and secure with assembly lube, then install new pump outer square cut seal.

14. Install two guide pins in case and lower the converter housing and oil pump into case. Install and torque retaining bolts to specification. Turn input shaft by hand to check for correct assembly, then install input shaft O-ring.

15. Turn transmission so bottom of case faces upward Lubricate governor hub and seals with automatic transmission fluid and install into rear of case. Install snap ring on output shaft, place a new gasket on governor hub and install governor body onto hub. Torque bolts to specification. The two governor valves should move freely after overnor body bolts are torqued.

16. Place speedometer drive gear retaining clip on output shaft and slide speedometer gear into place while depressing clip.

17. Install new extension housing seal using tool No. J 21426 or equivalent Install extension housing with new gasket ensuring parking pawl rod is properly align into housing. Torque bolts to specification, then install speedometer driven gear and bracket.

18. Turn transmission so that valve body area is facing up. Install detent valve, sleeve, spring and spring seat into case bore, depress valve spring and install retaining spring pin. Detent valve sleeve must be installed with slots facing fluid pan and spring pin must engage the proper groove in the sleeve and not into a fluid passage slot in the sleeve.

19. Install modulator valve sleeve into case with small end first. Tab must enage slot in modulator bore. Install modulator valve and plunger, then install new O-ring on modulator and install modulator into case, using tool J 23100 or equivalent. Use of an improper tool to install vacuum modulator may damage modulator internally.

20. Install servo apply rod, spring and piston into case using automatic transmission fluid to lubricate seal. Round end goes into case.

21. Install compressor J-23075 with tool offset toward rear of case, compress servo piston until seated and install retaining ring. To avoid damaging piston seat, tap lightly on piston while installing into case.

22. Loosen servo adjusting bolt locknut. Adjust servo apply rod by torquing adjusting bolt to 40 in lbs. Ensuring locknut remains loose, loosen adjusting bolt five (5) turns and tighten locknut. Install servo cover with new gasket then torque bolts to specification, if so equipped.

23. Install check balls in fluid passages in case, then place new transfer plate-to-case gasket on case and install guide pins in case for correct alignment of transfer plate and valve body. Install bolts holding transfer plate to valve body. Install long end of manual link into valve and short end of link into selector lever, then guide valve body onto guide pins.

24. Install valve body bolts and torque to specification starting from center of valve body and working outward. Install selector lever roller, spring and retainer and torque to specification.

25. Install reinforcement plate and ground wire, then torque bolts to specification.

26. Install governor pressure switch, if applicable, and torque to specification.

27. Install solenoid valve and tubing. Torque bolts to specification. Ensure that tubing does not interfere with manual valve operation.

28. Connect electrical connections at governor pressure switch, case electrical connector and solenoid.

29. Install fluid strainer, gasket and bolts, then install fluid pan and gasket.

30. Install torque converter so that the distance from lugs to front end of housing is as specified in dimension "A."
