Converter Housing, Oil Pump & Reverse Clutch
1. Remove second clutch assembly from oil pump shaft, see image.
2. Remove selective washer from oil pump shaft, then the oil pump outer oil seal, see image above step one.
3. Remove oil pump to converter housing attaching bolts, see first image, and separate housing from the pump, see second image.
4. Inspect converter housing oil seal and bushing. If necessary, remove converter housing bushing with tool J21465-17 and J-8O92. Install bushing using same tools until flush with front housing, see first image. Install new oil seal using tool J-21359, see second image. Check converter hub for nicks, burrs or other damage causing oil seal or bushing wear.
5. Mark relation of oil pump gears and remove from pump.
6. Install compressor J-23327 on reverse clutch retaining seat and compress clutch return springs, then remove snap ring, see image.
7. Remove compressor tool and the reverse clutch retaining ring, 24 reverse clutch springs and clutch piston.
8. If oil pressure checks diagnosed a faulty pressure regulator and boost valve, remove retaining pin, pressure regulator boost valve sleeve, spring, pressure regulator valve and two washers, see image.
9. Remove retaining pin, bore plug, spring and converter clutch actuator valve, if applicable.
10. Inspect oil pump bushing. If worn, thread a standard 3/4 inch pipe tap (tool J-23130-5) into bushing. Press out bushing using an arbor press. Protect pump face with a shop cloth. Thoroughly clean oil pump body including all holes and pockets. With oil pump shaft hole "A" facing downward, scribe an alignment mark on oil pump shaft inner diameter at the center of the oil groove to the right of hole "A." Scribe a second mark on outer edge of bushing through the centers of the small and large drilled holes "B." Place bushing into oil pump shaft with the small holes facing upward and align scribe marks on bushing with marks on oil pump shaft. Use tool J23130-1 an arbor press to seat bushing in shaft bore. Care must be taken so the bushing is pressed in straight, using the scribe marks as a guide until firmly seated, see image.
11. Throughly clean and inspect pressure regulator and converter clutch valve, if equipped. Lubricate pressure regulator valve with transmission fluid and install in oil pump body bore, see image above step 8. Install the two spring seats with spring, boost valve and boost valve sleeve. Depress sleeve until end aligns with pinhole and install retaining pin. Lubricate converter clutch valve, if equipped, then install valve, spring and bore plug into bore of oil pump, see image above step 8. Depress bore plug past pinhole, then install retaining pin.
12. Inspect oil seal rings on oil pump hub. Replace if worn or damaged.
13. Check reverse clutch piston for damage. Replace if necessary. Install new oil seals on reverse clutch piston. Use tool J-28241 to protect inner seal during installation.
14. Lubricate and install clutch piston into rear face of oil pump. Use tool J28241 to protect I.D. of seal.
15. Check reverse clutch piston springs for heat discoloration or other damage. Replace if necessary.
16. Install the 24 clutch return springs and retaining seat. Use compressor J-23327 to compress clutch return springs and install snap ring, see image above step 6. Use caution when pressing retaining seat into position since damage may occur if the seat engages the snap ring groove.
17. Install oil pump gears into housing, using location mark made before disassembly. Check the end clearance of both gears to oil pump face, see image. Clearance should be .0005 to .0035 inch. Install J-23082 onto oil pump drive gear. Measure clearance between drive gear and crescent segment while rotating drive gear one complete revolution. clearance should be .005 to .009 inch. Measure outer edge of driven gear to pump housing clearance while rotating gear one complete revolution. Clearance should be .003 to .007 inch. Measure clearance between crescent and outer driven gear. Clearance should be at least .005 inch.
18. Install oil pump wear plate on pump. Insert guide pins into oil pump for alignment of converter housing and lower housing onto pump. Loosely install converter housing attaching bolts.
19. Use alignment tool J-23082 to align converter housing to pump, see image. Tool must bottom on oil pump gear. Tighten inner five bolts then torque alternately to 13-17 ft lbs. Install a new converter housing to case rubber oil seal.
