Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair
Knuckle And Hub/Rotor Components:
REMOVE
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove locking hub. See Locking Hub / Service and Repair.
3. Remove disc brake caliper and position aside. Do not allow caliper to hang from brake hose.
4. Remove wheel bearing outer locknut, lock ring and wheel bearing inner adjusting nut.
5. Remove hub and disc assembly, and outer wheel bearing.
6. Remove Spindle from the steering knuckle.
7. Tie rod end from the steering arm.
8. Nuts, adapters and steering arm from steering knuckle.
9. Cotter pins and nuts on ball joints.
CAUTION: Do not remove the adjusting ring (300) unless new ball joints are being installed. If it is necessary to loosen the ring to remove the knuckle, do not loosen it more than two threads. Use special tool j 23447. The nonhardened threads in the yoke can be easily damaged by the hardened threads in the adjusting ring if caution is not used during knuckle removal.
10. Steering knuckle from the axle yoke.
^ Insert a wedge shaped tool between the lower ball joint and the yoke. Tap on the tool to release the knuckle assembly.
^ Insert the wedge shaped tool between the upper ball joint and the yoke. Tap on the tool to release the knuckle assembly.
INSTALL
1. Reverse procedure to install. Adjust wheel bearings. See Wheel Bearing / Adjustments.
