Ball Joint: Service and Repair



Ball Joints

Remove Or Disconnect

Front Suspension:




Front Suspension Key:




Knuckle And Hub/Rotor Components:




Removing The Lower Ball Joint:




Removing The Upper Ball Joint:






Tools Required:
- J 9519-30 Ball Joint Fixture
- J 23454-1 Lower Ball Joint Spacer
- J 23454-3 or
- J 23454-4 Upper Ball Joint Sleeve

- Raise the vehicle and support with suitable safety stands.

1. Wheel and tire assembly.
2. Wheel hum/rotor assembly.
3. Spindle.
4. Steering knuckle (274) and steering arm (290).
- Remove the steering arm (290) only if removing the left axle yoke ball joints.
- Place the steering knuckle in a vise (figure above).
5. Snap ring from the lower ball joint (293).
- Use J 9519-30, J 23454-1, J 23454-4 or equivalent. Tighten until the ball joint breaks free of the steering knuckle.
6. Lower ball joint (293); must be removed before any service can be done to the upper ball joint (294).
7. Upper ball joint (294).
- Use J 9519-30, J 23454-3 (or J6382-3) and J 23454-4. Tighten until the ball joint breaks free of the steering knuckle.

Tools Required:
- J 9519-30 Ball Joint Fixture
- J 23454-2 Upper and Lower Ball Joint Sleeve
- J 23454-3 or J 6382-3 Ball Joint Spacer

1. Lower ball joint (293) into the steering knuckle (274).
- The ball joint (no cotter pin hole in the threaded end) must be positioned straight.
- Use J 9519-30, J 23454-2, and J 23454-3 or J 6382-3. Tighten until the ball joint fully seats.
2. Snap ring in position.
3. Upper ball joint (294) into the steering knuckle (274).
- Use J 9519-30, J 23454-2 and J 23454-3 or J 6382-3. Tighten until the ball joint fully seats.
4. Steering arm (290) (if removed) and steering knuckle (274).
5. Spindle (265).
6. Wheel hub/rotor assembly.
- Adjust the wheel bearings.
7. Wheel and tire assembly.
- Check the front end alignment and reset as required.
- Lower the vehicle.
