Oil Pan: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Drain oil pan, then disconnect starter wiring.
4. Remove flywheel shield, then the starter motor.
5. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
6. Disconnect all exhaust hangers.
7. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and the oil pan, Fig. 9.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Prior to installation, ensure sealing surfaces on pan, cylinder block and front cover are clean and free of oil.
b. If reinstalling old pan, ensure all RTV has been removed, paying particular attention to the blind attaching holes.
c. Apply a 1/8 inch bead of RTV sealant to entire oil pan sealing flange, as shown in Fig. 10.
d. Tighten oil pan bolts to specifications.
