Outer CV Joint Replacement

Disassemble

Tool Required:
J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers (or equivalent)

1. Clamps (174 and 183). Cut to remove.





2. Snap ring (184). Use J 8059 (or equivalent).

3. Joint assembly from the axle shaft (182).





4. Balls (185).
^ Using a brass drift and hammer, tap on the cage (171) until it tilts enough to remove the first ball.
^ Remove the other balls in the same manner





5. Cage (171) from the outer race (170).
^ Pivot the cage with inner race (172) 90-degrees to the center line of the outer race.
^ Align the cage windows (B) with the lands (A) of the outer race.
^ Lift Out the cage with the inner race.





6. Inner race (172). Rotate the inner race up and out of the cage, as shown.

Clean
^ Parts (except outboard boot [173]) in solvent.

Assemble

Tools Required:
J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers (or equivalent)
J 34773 Clamp Installer

^ Apply grease to the ball grooves of the inner race (172), and outer race (170).

1. Inner race to the cage (171). Rotate into place, as shown.

2. Cage with inner race to the outer race.
^ Align the cage windows (B) with the lands (A).
^ Pivot the cage into position.
^ Make sure the retaining ring side of the inner race faces out.

3. Balls (185). Tap on the cage with a brass drift to tilt it enough to install the balls. Pack the joint with grease.

4. Outboard boot (173) to the axle shaft (182) (if removed).

5. Joint assembly to the axle shaft.

6. Snap ring (184). Use J 8059 (or equivalent).





7. Clamps (183) and 174). Use J 34773.
