Inner CV Joint Replacement






Disassemble

Tool Required:
J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers (or equivalent)

1. Clamps (175 and 177). Cut with side cutters to remove.

2. Axle shaft (182) with spider assembly (180) from the housing (178).





3. Spacer ring (181). Use J 8059 (or equivalent). Slide the spacer ring back on the axle shaft as shown. Then slide the spider assembly (180) back to expose the snap ring (179).

4. Snap ring (179). Use J 8059 (or equivalent).

5. Spider assembly (180).

Clean
^ Old grease from the housing (178), and inboard boot (176).

Assemble

Tools Required:
J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers (or equivalent)
J 34773 Clamp Installer

1. Inboard boot (176) to the axle shaft (182) (if removed).

2. Spider assembly (180) to the axle shaft. Make sure the snap ring counterbore faces the housing end of the axle, as shown in the illustration.

3. Snap ring (179). Use J 8059 (or equivalent).

4. Spacer ring (181). Use J 8059 (or equivalent). Make sure the spacer ring is fully seated in the groove.

^ Repack the housing (178) with about half of the grease furnished in the boot kit. Put the remainder of the grease in the boot. Coat the inside of the boot sealing lips with grease.

5. Axle shaft with spider assembly to the housing (178).





6. Clamps (175 and 177). Use J 34773.

Install or Connect

1. Drive axle to the vehicle. Push the axle end into the hub.





2. Washer (150) and nut (151).

Tighten
^ Nut (151) to 220-270 Nm (160-200 lb ft).

3. Retainer (152) and cotter pin (153).

Important
^ Align the cotter pin hole by rotating the retainer.
^ DO NOT back off the nut (151), or tighten nut more than specified, to install the cotter pin.
^ Bend the cotter pin so the retainer is held snugly, to prevent rattling.

4. Bolts (80 or 82).

Tighten
^ Bolts (80 or 82) to 80 Nm (60 lb ft).

5. Lower shock absorber bolts.

6. Tie rods. Refer to the steering knuckles.

7. Brake calipers and hoses.

8. Wheels and tires.

^ Lower the vehicle.
