Serpentine Belt - Frayed

Serpentine Belt Frayed
(Replace Power Steering Pump Bracket and Serpentine Belt)

Models:
1999-2001 Chevrolet Tracker with 2.0L Engine (VIN C - RPO L34)

Condition

Some customers may comment on a frayed serpentine belt.

Cause

The cause of this condition may be that some power steering pump brackets are not properly positioning the power steering pump pulley. A misalignment occurs between the power steering pump pulley and the water pump pulley.

Correction





Replace the power steering pump bracket and serpentine belt with the service parts using the procedure and part numbers listed below.

1. Remove the serpentine belt.

1.1. Use a wrench and rotate the belt tensioner clockwise.

1.2. With pressure applied to the wrench and tension relieved from the belt, remove the belt.

2. Remove the 3 bolts attaching the power steering pump to the bracket and set pump aside.

3. Remove the 4 bolts attaching the power steering pump bracket.

4. Install the power steering pump bracket and bolts.

Tighten

Tighten the bracket to engine bolts to 25 N.m (18.5 lb ft).

Tighten

Tighten the bracket to generator bolt to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).

5. Install the power steering pump and bolts.

Tighten

Tighten the bolts to 25 N.m (18.5 lb ft).





6. Install the serpentine belt.

6.1. Property route and install the belt onto the drive pulleys.

6.2. Use a wrench and rotate the belt tensioner clockwise.

6.3. With pressure applied to the wrench, install the belt.

6.4. With the belt installed properly, release the belt tensioner.

6.5. Inspect that the belt is property installed on all pulleys. When a new belt is correctly installed, the hash mark will be within the indicated range on the tensioner.
