Loose Steering Wheel - Tilt Column

1. Move the steering wheel in the shaft direction in order to inspect for looseness or a rattle. If the steering wheel is loose or rattles, tighten or replace the steering wheel as necessary. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement
2. Move the steering wheel in a lateral direction in order to inspect for looseness. If the steering wheel is loose, tighten or replace the steering wheel as necessary. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement.





3. With the engine OFF, the vehicle on level ground, and the front tires and wheels in a straight forward position, rotate the steering wheel to the left and to the right. Measure the steering wheel play.
Measurement
The steering wheel play tolerance is 0 - 30 mm (0 - 1.2 inch).
4. If steering wheel play is not within specification, inspect the following components for looseness, wear, or damage.
- The tie-rod end ball stud
- The lower ball joint
- The steering shaft coupling
- The steering gear

5. Tighten loose components. Replace defective parts. Refer to the following procedures:
