Fan Clutch: Service and Repair

Fan Clutch Replacement

^ Tools Required
- J 41240 Fan Clutch Wrench and Spanner
- J 41240-5A Fan Clutch Wrench

Removal Procedure

Caution: Do not use or attempt to repair a damaged cooling fan assembly. Replace damaged fans with new assemblies. An unbalanced cooling fan could fly apart causing personal injury and property damage.





1. Remove the air cleaner and the duct.
2. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir or surge tank.
3. Remove the upper radiator shroud from the radiator.
4. Remove the fan clutch assembly on the 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L and 8.1L using the J 41240. Use the prongs of the J 41240-1 in the holes of the water pump pulley.
5. Remove the fan clutch assembly on the 6.5L using the J41240-5A. Use the prongs of the J 41240-1 in the holes of the water pump pulley.





6. Remove the retaining bolts from the fan and clutch.
7. Remove the fan from the clutch.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the fan to the clutch.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the retaining bolts to the fan and clutch.
^ Tighten the 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L, and the 8.1L fan to clutch bolts to 33 Nm (24 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the 6.5L diesel fan to clutch bolts to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).





3. Install the fan and clutch on the 4.3L, 5.0, 5.7L, and the 8.1L using the J41240.
^ Tighten the fan clutch nut to 57 Nm (42 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the fan and clutch on the 6.5L using the J 41240-5A and J 41240.
^ Tighten the fan clutch nut to 57 Nm (42 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the upper radiator shroud.
6. Install the coolant recovery reservoir or surge tank.
7. Install the air cleaner and the duct.
