Airbag System Check

Warning: Before attempting to diagnose, remove or install any airbag system components, unless otherwise noted, you must first disconnect and isolate battery ground cable. Failure to do so could result in accidental deployment and possible personal injury.

Note: To diagnose and test the airbag system, the DRBII readout tool must be connected to the ASDM, following manufacturer's instructions. The module is located behind the center console on all models except Fifth Avenue. Fifth Avenue models have a DRBII connector located in the right kick panel.

SEE Powertrain Management/Computers and Control Systems/Testing and Inspection/Procedures.

Note: After performing system testing, perform any available verification test provided to complete each test. failure to do so can result in incorrect reading or improperly repaired systems.

1. If the airbag module housing shows signs of damage or abuse, replace the module.
2. Ensure both front impact sensors are properly installed to the upper crossmember of the radiator closure panel.
3. Check the airbag warning lamp for proper operation as follows:
a. Turn ignition switch to the On position.
b. If the airbag warning lamp does not light, test the system using the DRB II diagnostic test tool.
c. If the airbag warning lamp lights, but fails to go out after ten seconds, test the system using the DRB II diagnostic tool.
d. Repair the system as necessary.
