Front Seat Belt Sealant Staining



MODELS:

1992-1993 (AJ) Lebaron Convertible


SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

On some vehicles, a sticky black substance may appear on one or both of the front seat, shoulder harness/lap belt webbing material. This substance may be coming from the backing of the butyl seal silencer patch located on the inner quarter panel. If this condition is evident, the following repair procedure is to be performed.





PARTS REQUIRED



REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the affected seat belt(s) and installing two fasteners through the silencer patch on both inside quarter panels.

1. Remove quarter trim panel and affected seat belt, as outlined in the appropriate service manual.

2. Before installing the new seat belt, go to step 3.

3. Reposition the silencer patch over the upper access holes in the inner quarter panel and press firmly in position.





4. Trim top of silencer patch along horizontal line [A], with utility knife, while retaining material to the upper right corner [B], as indicated in the illustration.



5. Before proceeding with step 6, protect any exposed electrical connectors metal shavings resulting from the drilling operation.



6. Drill two 1/4" holes in the inner quarter panel as indicated in the illustration at points [C]. The rearward hole is located 1" forward of the folding top mounting bracket [D] and 1" below the trim line [A]. The forward hole is located 7 1/2" forward of the folding top mounting bracket [D] and 1" below the trim line [A].

7. Insert a fastener through the silencer patch and sheet metal at each location.

8. Install new seat belt and reinstall quarter trim panel.

9. Repeat steps 1 through 8 if seat belt is contaminated on the opposite side, if not, proceed to step 10.

10. Remove opposite side quarter trim panel and protect seat belt mechanism from any drill shavings, before repeating steps 3-7.

11. Reinstall quarter trim panel.
