SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Excessive road noise heard inside vehicle while driving on rough road surfaces; more pronounced in the rear seat.

DIAGNOSIS:

Verify that TSB's 23-28-98, Trunk Water and Dust Leaks, and/or 23-30-98, Wind Noise, have been performed or that the symptoms are not present. Road noise can enter the passenger compartment through the same path(s) as water and dust. If excessive road noise is still present in the rear seat area, perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves installing an under package shelf silencer, a package shelf sound absorber, wheel house and shock tower dampers, and stuffer bags.

1. Remove rear seat cushion and back.

2. Remove quarter trim upper (leave seat belt attached) and lower trim panels.



3. Remove push in fasteners.

4. Pull rear shelf trim panel away from rear glass to disengage clips.

5. Open deck lid and disconnect CHMSL wire connector (Concorde).

6. Remove rear shelf panel from vehicle.

7. From the trunk side loosely fit the under shelf panel silencer. p/n 04628854/5AA. Mark fastener locations, drill 6.6 mm (1/4 in.) holes.





8. Install two stuffer bags, p/n 04780598AA, through opening in sheet metal between speakers. Position the bags toward the center of the vehicle (Figure 1).

9. Install silencer with pins, p/n 06501925.

10. Fold down trunk trim over the wheel wells to expose sheet metal.





11. Install two stuffer bags, p/n 04780598AA, one on each side, through opening in sheet metal, over the wheel wells (Figure 2).

12. Install wheel house dampers, p/n's 05014548/9AA, on each wheel well and shock tower dampers, p/n 05014552AA, on each shock tower (Figure 2).

13. Install trunk trim.

14. Install package shelf sound absorber, p/n 05014546/7AA, on top of sheet metal.

15. Install rear shelf panel, quarter trim panels, and seat.
