NO: 07-02-98

GROUP: Cooling

DATE: Feb. 27, 1998

SUBJECT:
A/C Belt Noise/Fraying

MODELS:
1998 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 2.7L ENGINE.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The A/C belt or tensioner pulley may be making noise or the belt may be fraying at the edge.

DIAGNOSIS:
Inspect the A/C belt for fraying, the A/C belt tensioner contacting the front cover, or the A/C belt tensioner bracket bent. If any of these conditions exist, perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 04792578AA Bracket, A/C Belt Tensioner
1 04792577AA Bushing, Tensioner Pulley
1 06101436 Bolt, Tensioner Pulley
AR(1) 04792071 Belt, A/C

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the A/C belt tensioner bracket, the pulley bushing and bolt, and discarding the spacer from the pivot bolt.

WARNING:
DO NOT REMOVE A/C BELT TENSIONER LOCKING BOLT WITHOUT FIRST HOLDING THE TENSIONER WITH A 1/2" DRIVE BREAKER BAR, AS PERSONAL INJURY COULD RESULT.

1. Insert a 1/2" drive breaker bar into the square opening on the tensioner. Hold counterclockwise pressure on the tensioner, while removing tensioner locking bolt.

2. Carefully release the tension of spring on the tensioner.

3. Remove the A/C pivot bolt, pivot bolt spacer, tensioner, and spring from the front timing cover.

4. Remove the tensioner pulley from the bracket. Discard the existing bracket, pulley bushing and bolt and the pivot bolt spacer (Figure 1).

5. Install the tensioner pulley onto the new bracket, p/n 04792578AA, using new bushing, p/n 04792577AA and bolt, p/n 06101436.

6. Insert the existing spring into appropriate position on the new bracket. Use the new belt position if installing a new belt or the used belt position if installing a used belt.

7. Install the spring tensioner and the pivot bolt to the front cover. Tighten the pivot bolt only finger tight to hold the bracket in place using a 13 mm socket.

8. Using a 1/2" drive breaker bar, apply counterclockwise pressure until the locking bolt can be installed.

9. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise until the belt can be installed on the pulleys.

10. Release the tension, tighten the pivot bolt and locking bolt to 28 Nm (250 in.lbs.) using a 13 mm socket.

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
