Service Procedure
A. Garnish Molding Inspection:Inspect the driver and passenger door garnish moldings for an out-of-position condition, fore and aft movement and damage as follows:
a. If either garnish molding is damaged or missing due to contact with the rear edge of the front fender, a new garnish molding must be painted and installed. Continue with Section C - Garnish Molding Replacement. Very few vehicles are expected to require garnish molding replacement.
b. Inspect the front edge of each garnish molding. If either molding extends beyond the door edge and is not damaged, new trim clips must be installed on the out-of-position molding(s). Continue with Section B - Garnish Molding Trim Clip Replacement.
c. If the garnish molding does not extend beyond the door edge, grasp the molding by the front and rear edge and attempt to slide the molding sideways (fore and aft) on the door. If the garnish molding moves, new clips must be installed. Continue with Section B - Garnish Molding Trim Clip Replacement. If the molding is not out-of-position and does not move on the door, no further action is required.
NOTE:
Some vehicles may require garnish molding replacement on one door and new garnish molding trim clips installed on the other door.
B. Garnish Molding Trim Clip Replacement:
NOTE:
Before removing the garnish molding inspect the upper edge
of the molding at both ends for a gap between the molding and the door sheet metal. If a gap(s) is present, a small piece of plastic shim stock (approximately 5/64 inch thick) must be wedged under the bottom side of the upper molding retainer rail at the end(s) before installing the repaired molding.
1. With the door ajar, remove the right door garnish molding by grasping the bottom of the garnish molding and pulling outward.
2. Remove and discard all five of the original door garnish molding trim clips.
3. Inspect all of the trim clip retainers for cracks. If any of the retainers are cracked, replace the garnish molding.
4. Install a new trim clip in each of the four rear retainers.
5. Mix the structural adhesive (P/N 05066074AA) in the following manner:
a. Mix the "Base" (Part B) and "Accelerator" (Part A) using equal amounts of each.
b. Mix both parts thoroughly until the color is uniform.
NOTE:
Use the adhesive within 2 minutes after mixing. The adhesive will cure within one hour at 73 F (23 C). Cure time may vary with shop temperature, curing slower at cooler temperatures, faster at warmer temperatures.
6. Apply structural adhesive mixed in Step 4 to the trim panel side of the front trim clip before installing it on the door garnish molding retainer.
CAUTION:
Do not apply structural adhesive to any of the other trim clips or clip retainers. The other four trim clips must "float" on the clip retainers to allow the garnish molding to expand or contract due to temperature changes.
7. Position the front trim clip within 1/32 inch (1 mm) of the front edge of the clip retainer on the door garnish molding.
8. Fill the front trim clip retainer cavity on the garnish molding with structural adhesive.
9. Install the top of the garnish molding onto the retainer on the door and adjust the position of the garnish molding fore and aft to obtain clearance between the front door edge and the rear fender edge.
NOTE:
If there was a gap between the molding and the door, install a plastic shim under the upper molding retainer end(s) before installing the garnish molding.
10. Carefully press each trim clip into its respective hole on the door.
NOTE:
Make sure that each trim clip is firmly seated into its retaining hole.
11. Touch up the paint on the front edge of the door garnish molding and rear edge of the fender if required.
12. Repeat steps 1 through 11 of this procedure on the other door garnish molding if required.
C. Garnish Molding Replacement:
NOTE:
Only those garnish moldings that are damaged or missing, as determined by the inspection in section "A", require replacement. Very few vehicles are expected to require garnish molding replacement. New garnish molding(s) must be painted prior to installation.
NOTE:
Before removing the garnish molding inspect the upper edge of the molding at both ends for a gap between the molding and the door sheet metal. If gap(s) is present, a small piece of plastic shim stock (approximately 5/64 inch thick) must be wedged under the bottom side of the upper molding retainer rail at the end(s) before installing the new molding.
1. With the door ajar, remove the damaged door garnish molding by grasping the bottom of the garnish molding and pulling outward.
2. Clean, sand, prime and paint the new door garnish molding(s) using the following procedure:
a. Wash the new molding with soap and water. Then dry molding thoroughly.
b. Clean the new molding with Wax and Grease Remover.
c. Sand the molding with 600 grit or finer sandpaper.
d. Wipe down the molding with with Wax and Grease Remover after sanding.
e. Apply one coat of universal plastic primer and allow the primer to dry.
Garnish Molding Paint Specification
f. Apply one coat of primer sealer to the entire molding. Allow the primer to dry before continuing.
9. Apply the basecoat color to hiding.
h. Apply 2 to 3 coats of flexiblized clearcoat over the basecoat.
i. Allow the molding to dry overnight or bake the panel following paint manufacturers recommendations.
3. Install five new trim clips onto the garnish molding retainers.
NOTE:
Replacement garnish moldings do not require structural adhesive on the front trim clip.
4. Install the top edge of the garnish molding onto the retainer on the door and adjust the position of the garnish molding fore and aft to obtain the proper location to the forward door edge.
NOTE:
If there was a gap between the molding and door, install a plastic shim under the upper molding retainer end(s) before installing the garnish molding.
5. Carefully press each trim clip into its respective hole on the door.
NOTE:
Make sure that each trim clip is firmly seated into its retaining hole.
6. Install a new "CHRYSLER" nameplate onto the garnish molding. The transfer paper should line up with the top of the door garnish molding and be 2 inches (51 mm) back from the front edge of the door.
NOTE:
Some vehicles have chrome letters, while other vehicles have gold letters. Verify the letter color before installing the "CHRYSLER" nameplate onto the garnish molding.
