Removal
Negative Battery Cable:
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable from the negative (-) terminal of the battery.
Accelerator Cable Locknut:
2. Loosen the accelerator cable lock nut of the throttle stay.
Accelerator Cable:
3. Remove the accelerator cable from the throttle lever.
4. Remove the accelerator cable from the clamp.
PCV Hose:
5. Remove the PCV hose.
Air Cleaner Hose:
6. Remove the air cleaner hose from the throttle body.
Air Cleaner Hose:
7. Remove the air cleaner hose from the air cleaner.
NOTE: This operation is unnecessary, unless there is a need to replace the air cleaner hose.
Air Cleaner Hose:
8. Put a label on each rubber hose connected to the air cleaner cap. Then disconnect the rubber hoses.
Air Cleaner:
9. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
Alternator Ground Cable:
10. Disconnect the connector of the ground cable of the alternator.
NOTE: Be sure to hold the connector proper during the disconnection.
A/C Belt Tensioner:
11. Removal of air conditioner belt. (Genuine air conditioner-equipped vehicle only).
(a) Loosen the idler pulley mount nut.
(b) Loosen the adjusting bolt.
(c) Remove the drive belt.
Alternator:
12. Removal of alternator drive belt.
(a) Loosen the lock bolts.
(b) Remove the drive belt.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the drive belt during the removal.
Front Engine Cover:
13. Remove the right front engine under cover.
Supporting Engine:
14. Support the oil pan with a garage jack. Slightly jack up the engine so that no excessive force may be applied to the front mountings.
NOTE:
^ Place a wooden block between the jack and the engine.
^ Care must be exercised to ensure that the wooden block is not interfering with the oil drain plug.
^ Be careful not to deform the oil pan.
Front Mounting Bracket:
15. Removal of front mounting bracket.
(a) Remove the nuts attaching the front mounting bracket to the front mounting.
WARNING: Protect your eyes by wearing protective glasses.
Front Mounting Bracket:
(b) Remove the three bolts attaching the front mounting bracket to the cylinder head.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the oil filler hose.
Front Mounting Bracket:
(c) Lower the garage jack slightly and remove the front mounting bracket.
Water Pump Pulley:
16. Removal of water pump pulley.
(a) While preventing the water pump pulley from turning using a flat screwdriver, loosen the attaching bolt of the water pump pulley.
(b) Remove the attaching bolt of the water pump pulley. Remove the water pump pulley.
Setting Engine At #1 TDC:
17. Set the piston No.1 to the top dead center under the compression stroke.
Turn the crankshaft until the ignition timing mark on the flywheel is aligned with the mating mark on the bell housing. Remove the oil filler cap. Check that the valve rocker arm of the exhaust valve of the cylinder No.1 is completely free. If the exhaust valve is pushed up, turn the crankshaft 360 degrees. Again align the ignition timing mark on the flywheel with the mating mark on the bell housing.
Holding Ring Gear:
18. While preventing the ring gear from turning using a screwdriver, remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
Crank Pulley:
19. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
Upper Cover:
20. Remove the timing belt upper cover.
Lower Cover:
21. Remove the timing belt lower cover.
Crank Timing Belt Pulley:
22. Remove the crankshaft timing belt pulley flange.
Belt Direction:
23. Removal of timing belt.
NOTE: If the timing belt is reused, an arrow mark indicating the engine rotation direction should be put on the belt, using chalk.
Idler Pulley Bolt:
(a) Loosen the idler pulley bolt. Push the lever as far as it will go and then temporarily tighten it.
Removing Belt:
(b) Remove the belt.
CAUTION:
^ Do no bend, twist or turn the belt inside out.
^ Do not allow the belt to come into contact with oil or water.
^ Do not try to pry the timing belt with a screwdriver or the like during the removal or installation.
^ Do not utilize the belt tension when installing or removing the set bolt of the camshaft timing belt pulley.
Idler Pulley And Return Spring:
24. Remove the idler pulley and return spring.
25. Remove the crankshaft timing belt pulley.
Crank Timing Belt Pulley Flange:
26. Remove the crankshaft timing belt pulley flange.
27. Removal of camshaft timing belt pulley.
(a) Remove the camshaft timing belt pulley bolt. During the removal of the camshaft timing belt pulley bolt, prevent the rotation of the pulley by inserting an iron rod into the pulley hole, utilizing the rib at the cylinder head side.
Camshaft Pulley:
(b) Remove the camshaft timing belt pulley, using the following SST:
