Poor Or No AM/FM Audio Reception
POOR OR NO AM/FM AUDIO RECEPTION
Special Tools:
For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information.
Diagnostic Test
1. CHECK THE ANTENNA CONNECTION
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the AM/FM Audio Antenna white connector (1) at the rear of the RADIO. .
3. Inspect the Audio Antenna connection.
Is the Antenna connection clean and secure?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Repair the Antenna connection as needed.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Body Verification Test.
2. CHECK THE RADIO
1. Connect the (9977-6-FM) to the antenna connection on the back of the Radio.
2. Place the magnetic test antenna on the roof of the vehicle.
3. Turn the ignition on.
4. Turn the Radio on and set it to AM or FM band.
5. Tune in to several AM and FM stations.
Is the audio reception still poor or not available?
Yes
- Replace the Radio. .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Body Verification Test.
No
- Go To 3
3. TEST THE ANTENNA MODULE AND GRID
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the test antenna and connect the harness connector to the Radio.
3. Using a trim stick or another suitable wide flat-bladed tool, carefully pry between the Center High Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL) (3) and the CHMSL cover (4). The CHMSL cover (4) is secured to the headliner by five stamped nuts (1). As you pry on the trim stick, carefully pull down on the sides of the CHMSL cover far enough to disengage the three snap clips that secure it to the inner rear roof header.
NOTE: Be extremely careful not to pull too hard on the headliner (2) which could cause it to damage.
4. Once the snap clips of the CHMSL cover have been released, the cover can be removed by pulling down on the headliner and removing the five stamped 10mm nuts that secure it to the headliner (1).
5. Disconnect the antenna module white AM/ FM audio fakra connector along the rear roof support to the passenger side of the AM/FM antenna module and connect the (9977-6-FM) to the harness connector.
6. Turn the ignition on.
7. Turn the Radio on and set it to AM or FM band.
8. Tune in to several AM and FM stations.
Is the audio reception still poor or not available?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Check the connector from the Antenna Module to the Rear Glass Integral Antenna (grid) connector and the grid itself and repair if necessary. Testing and Inspection. If the grid checks good, replace the Antenna Module. .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Body Verification Test.
4. TEST THE ANTENNA CABLE BETWEEN THE ANTENNA MODULE CONNECTOR AND THE IN-LINE CONNECTOR.
1. Turn the ignition off.
2. Disconnect the (9977-6-FM) from the Antenna cable.
3. Connect the appropriate 50 Ohm test (9977-6-4) (1) or (9977-6-2) (1) to the Antenna cable (2) at the Antenna Module harness connector.
4. Remove the glove box (1) .
5. Disconnect the white AM/ FM audio fakra connector (1).
6. Connect the (9977-6-3) (2) to the white AM/ FM audio fakra connector (3) behind the glove box opening.
7. Set the DVOM (3) to OHMS or ohms, Insert the probes of the DVOM into the antenna tool.
8. Measure the Resistance across the tool terminals.
Is the resistance between 50 ohms ± 5% (47.5 to 52.5)?
Yes
- Replace the section of antenna cable from the Radio to the in-line connector behind the glove box.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Body Verification Test.
No
- Replace the antenna cable from the Antenna Module to the in-line connector behind the glove box.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Body Verification Test.
