Predisassembly Inspection

Fig. 59 Mounting Differential Case Assembly In Vise:

1. Secure differential case assembly in a vise so that differential side gear (right) is facing upward as shown.

Fig. 60 Inserting Feeler Gauge Into Differential Case:

2. Insert a 0.0012 inch (.03 mm) feeler gauge at two places (diagonally) between differential case B and thrust washer.
CAUTION: Do not insert feeler gauge in oil groove of differential case B.

Fig. 61 Checking Differential Gear Backlash (W/Limited Slip Differential):

3. Insert side gear holding tool No. MB990990 or equivalent at spline part of differential case B (right) and ensure that side gear rotates.
4. Insert a 0.0035 inch (.09 mm) feeler gauge to replace 0.0012 inch (.03 mm) feeler gauge.
5. Insert side gear holding tool No. MB990990 or equivalent at spline part of differential case B (right) and ensure that side gear does not rotate.
6. Differential gear backlash (clearance in thrust direction of side gear) should be within 0.0012-0.0035 inch (.03 mm-0.09 mm). If clearance in the thrust direction of the side gear is within specification, backlash of differential gear is normal.

Fig. 62 Exploded View Of Differential Carrier (W/Limited Slip Differential):

7. If clearance in thrust direction of side gear is not within specification, remove differential case A and make adjustment by adjusting thickness of the thrust washer (left).
