Rear Axle Shaft Disassembly/Assembly

DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove Tripod Joint (TJ) boot bands.
2. Remove TJ case.
3. Remove snap ring from TJ end of driveshaft.
4. Remove spider assembly from driveshaft.
NOTE: Do not disassemble spider assembly.
5. Wrap vinyl tape around splines of driveshaft then remove TJ boot.
6. Remove Birfield Joint (BJ) bands.
7. Wrap vinyl tape around splines of driveshaft then remove BJ joint boot.
8. Remove BJ joint.
NOTE: Do not disassemble BJ joint.
INSPECTION
1. Check driveshaft for damage, bending or corrosion.
2. Check driveshaft splines for wear or damage.
3. Check BJ joint for entry of water or foreign material.
4. Check spider assembly for roller rotation, wear or corrosion.
5. Check BJ outer race for damage or corrosion.
6. Check boots for damage, cracking or wear.
ASSEMBLY
NOTE: Reverse disassembly procedure to assemble, noting the following:
1. Wrap vinyl tape around splines on driveshaft, then install BJ and TJ boots.
2. Fill inside of BJ and TJ boots with half of grease included in repair kit.
3. Secure boot bands with driveshaft at a zero degree angle.
4. Apply grease to spider assembly.
5. With chamfered, spline end first, install TJ on drive shaft.
6. Set TJ boot bands 3.23-4.47 inches apart, to adjust amount of air inside boot, then tighten TJ boot bands securely.
