A/C Discharge Line - Contacts Exhaust Manifold Shield

NO.: 24-19-92
GROUP: Air Conditioning
DATE: Dec. 14, 1992

SUBJECT:
A/C Compressor Discharge Line Contact With Exhaust Manifold Heat Shield

MODELS:

1993 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some 3.5L engine equipped vehicles built before 12-01-92 (MDH 12-01-XX) may have the A/C compressor discharge line in contact with the exhaust manifold heat shield. This condition will not create an immediate failure to the discharge line, but will shorten its life if left uncorrected.

DIAGNOSIS:

Examine the vehicle and determine how close the A/C compressor discharge line is to the exhaust manifold heat shield, If the clearance is less than 3/8 inch, the clearance should be adjusted to between 3/8 and 1/2 inch per the repair procedure.

Examine the discharge line for any signs of damage, and replace if necessary. Leak test all lines that are not replaced per the "low refrigerant level leak test" on page 24-2 of the 1993 Concorde/Intrepid/Vision Service Manual (Publication Number 81-270-3140).

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. To gain the necessary access to safely adjust the discharge line clearance, the air cleaner must first be removed from the vehicle.

2. Once the air cleaner has been removed, loop a long flexible strap around the A/C discharge line at the hose crimp nearest the compressor and pull lightly in the outboard direction. Because the A/C system is still charged, use a long enough strap to allow the repair person to remain a safe distance from the underhood area. Apply a few light pulls to the strap, checking the clearance after each pull, until the clearance is between 3/8 and 1/2 inch.
