DISCUSSION:

The fuel level gauge on LH vehicles is controlled by the Body Control Module (BCM). The BCM only updates the fuel gauge when the engine is running (engine speed greater than 400 RPM). Without the engine running, the gauge will indicate the fuel level measured in the first 1/2 second after the key is placed in the run/start position. This may cause an improper diagnosis when repairing a vehicle.

Therefore, whenever diagnosis or repair of a vehicle requires fuel gauge monitoring, the engine must be running.
