6 Engine Stalling During Shifting

PROBLEM
Engine stalls at time of shift.

DESCRIPTION
The engine running at idle stalls when the selector lever position is changed for a shift from N to D, 2, L or R. In this case, a defective engine system, torque converter clutch solenoid, etc. are suspected.

PROBABLE CAUSE OF TROUBLE
- Defective engine system
- Defective torque converter clutch solenoid
- Defective valve body
- Defective torque converter

INSPECTION OF ENGINE SYSTEM
- Check the control system, ignition system, fuel system and main system and verify that everything is in order.
- If there is trouble, repair or replace the engine system.

After the end of the above procedure

INSPECTION OF SOLENOID VALVE CONNECTOR
- Check to be sure that there is no water in the connector.
- Check to be sure that none of the terminals are shorted to each other.

After the end of the above procedure

INSPECTION OF TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID
- Check to ensure that debris is not causing the valve to stick.
- If there is trouble, replace the solenoid as an assembly.

After the end of the above procedure

TRANSAXLE COOLING SYSTEM INSPECTION
- Check for plugged cooler lines.
- Check for plugged oil cooler.

After the end of the above procedure

DISASSEMBLY, CLEANING AND REASSEMBLY OF VALVE BODY A.
- Carefully check for loose mounting bolts, and damaged, cracked or displaced 0-ring, valve intermediate plate, and body.
- If there are damaged or cracked parts that appear to be un-repairable, replace the valve body as an assembly.

After the end of the above procedure

INSPECTION OF TORQUE CONVERTER
- Check for seizure which might have resulted from peeling of torque converter clutch lining.
- If there is trouble, replace the torque converter as an assembly.
