NOISE - SQUEAL/SQUEAK/CHIRP -
NP 208 TRANSFER CASE

LIGHT TRUCKS
1982-83 BRONCO, F150-250 (4x4)

Squeal, squeak, or chirping noise in the transfer case on new vehicles with less than 100 miles may be a normal condition that will cease after a short break-in period. If a vehicle as described above exhibits this condition, the following service procedures are suggested.

^ Drive the vehicle in the 4-wheel drive (4H)* mode with the front locking hubs engaged for 10-20 miles at road speeds of 45-55 mph.

^ Shift the transfer case back into the 2-wheel (2H) mode with front locking hubs disengaged, per the transfer case shift procedures outlined in the 1982-83 F-Series and Bronco Owner's Guides. Drive the vehicle in the 2H mode for an additional 10-20 miles at road speed of 45-55 mph.

Manufacturing tolerances of the various thrust washers within the transfer case may cause the noise. The described break-in procedure of the transfer case "burnishes" the internal rotating components which removes most of the sharp edges, minute surface burrs, etc.

*NOTE:
The Owners's Manual and the 4-wheel drive shift procedure decal states that the vehicles should not be operated in 4-wheel drive on dry, hard surface, however, for this limited number of miles no adverse effects will result.
