SAFETY RECALL 87M53
(Summary of Major Recall Features)


VEHICLES AFFECTED Emergency Medical Service (EMS) vehicles that have been
manufactured from 1983 through 1987-model 7.5 liter engine-
equipped Econoline E350 cutaway chassis or vans. (Note that
some pre-1983-model vehicles may have been previously
updated to 1983-model configuration by TSB 82-14-21 sub-
sequently amended by TSB Article No. 83-11-12-S (electric
fuel pump); handle these unique vehicles as if they were

actually 1983-model vehicles.)

REASONS FOR THIS The affected vehicles may contain leaks in the fuel system
RECALL or experience excessive fuel system pressure as a result of
a variety of conditions, including the use of high-volitility fuel in hot weather. This pressure may create the potential for expulsion of liquid fuel from the fuel filler pipe when the fuel filler cap is removed. In the presence of an ignition source, fuel leakage or expulsion can cause a fire.

INSPECTION Follow the 27-step procedure shown in the Ambulance
PROCEDURE Inspection Instructions. It is essential to record on
the 3-part inspection sheet form all discrepancies found on the vehicle. A quantity of inspection sheets and forms is included with this bulletin. If additional quantities are needed, telephone or telex your order to Wixom using the address and phone detail shown in Attachment II, Page 1 of 4, "Parts Ordering Information."

^ After the inspection procedure and dealership sign-off is completed, copies of the inspection sheet form must be distributed as follows:

- Original sheet with copy of MAC Form 1863 mailed to:

- Second copy to be retained in dealership service files

MODIFICATIONS:

Vehicle ^ Modifications to the fuel venting and emissions control
Modifications systems will be accomplished with the Ford Modification
Kits described in the accompanying Technical and Administrative Instructions, Attachment II. Additional modifications are also provided for vehicles that may be operated at altitudes over 4,000 feet above sea level. You should ask the owner/operator if the vehicle(s) will be operated above this altitude. Dealer technicians are to install the modification kits per the technical instructions.

^ Prepare an "Authorized Modifications" decal (Form FPS-8262) as shown below. Affix the decal to a flat clean surface on the radiator support. (Order the "Authorized Modifications" decal as needed, from Service Recalls, Ford International Export Sales - address shown on the letterhead of this bulletin.)

Correction of As outlined in the Ambulance Inspection Instructions, ten (10)
Unacceptable specific items, any of which if found to be unacceptable
Conditions during the inspection, is to be noted on the inspection form.
Each of these must be corrected before the vehicle is released to the operator.

Normal service procedures are to be used, as required, to correct these specified unacceptable conditions, except for items #10 and #14 covered below:

^ For vehicles covered by this recall, ruptures or leaks in the exhaust system, Item #10, are to be handled by replacement of the appropriate part(s).

For any liquid traps found in the fuel filler system and so noted for Item #14, specific repair instructions will be provided by calling a special advisor who will consider individual situations as they are reported.
