ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION - 7.5L

GASOLINE ENGINES

LIGHT TRUCK 1983-86 E SERIES, F SERIES

This TSB has been revised by TSB 86-22-21, and supplemented by TSB 87-2-24. The amount of oil an engine may use will vary with the way the vehicle is driven and the conditions that the vehicle is operated under. Because the 7.5L light truck engine has a relatively high block hardness as compared to passenger car engines, a longer break in period may be required for optimum piston ring to cylinder bore seating. Therefore, 7,500 miles as stated in the Ford Warranty and Policy Manual, should be accumulated for engine "break in" before decisions are made regarding acceptable oil consumption rates.

Any concern engine should be inspected for oil leaks as outlined in TSB 80-15-5. After any leaks are corrected, perform the following steps prior to releasing the vehicle for evaluation mileage:

1. Replace the existing PCV valve grommet with an oil fill cap assembly (part number E5UZ-6766-A) with a new PCV valve grommet (part number E6TZ- 6A892-C) installed in the cap opening.

2. Replace the existing PCV valve hose with an appropriate length of 3/8 inch service hose and insert the PCV valve into the new grommet.

Figure 13:

3. With an engine at operating temperature, torque the intake manifold bolts to 30-43 N-m (22-32 ft. lbs.) in the sequence shown in Figure 13 to ensure proper seating of the manifold to cylinder head mounting face. This will eliminate the possibility of an internal gasket leak at the intake port which could ingest oil.
4. Verify the engine oil dipstick reading with the correct amount of oil in the engine. Remark the stick if required.

5. Verify the engine oil usage as outlined in TSB 80-15-5.

If the oil economy does not meet the guidelines of 900 miles to the quart, as defined in the Ford Warranty and Policy Manual, install valve guide seals E6TZ-6571-E on the intake valve guides only. Refer to the 1986 Truck Engine Shop Manual (Volume B) for engine service procedures.

OIL CONSUMPTION - 7.5L - SUPPLEMENTAL Article No.
SERVICE INFORMATION 87-2-24

LIGHT TRUCK 1983-86 E SERIES, F SERIES

ISSUE: This article is being republished to supplement the parts listed in TSB 86-16-16. This TSB originally provided a service procedure for diagnosing and servicing oil consumption concerns on the 7.5L engine.

ACTION: To service 7.5L engines that have oversized valve stems, use intake valve guide seal C8SZ-6571-A. This intake valve guide seal may be used on 0.015 and 0.030 oversize valve guides.

NOTE: Some 7.5L engines may have one or more oversized valve stems from production.
