SPECIAL NOTE

The following instructions describe the installation procedure for the midship tank fuel line replacement package. It is designed specifically for 1986 and 1987 Ford E350-based ambulances equipped with dual fuel tanks. These vehicles are completed by many different second stage manufacturers. It is not possible to identify all the various designs and modifications used by these manufacturers. Therefore, if you encounter difficulties not anticipated in these instructions, contact the closest Ford Parts and Service Division District Office for assistance.

DRAIN THE FUEL TANKS

1. To avoid electrical sparking at the tank, disconnect the battery ground cable.

2. Pump the fuel out of the midship fuel tank into a suitable container. (Reference Rotunda pump unit #034-00002 or equivalent).

3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

Replacement of the Midship Tank Fuel Lines

1. Loosen the hose clamps securing the fuel fill hose and fill vent hose to the midship tank. Disconnect the hoses.

2. Disconnect the vent valve, 1/4 inch diameter rubber vapor hose at its connection with the steel 1/4 inch vapor line on the right side of the tank.

3. Supporting the tank with a transmission jack, loosen the fuel tank retention straps and lower the tank.

4. Remove the midship fuel tank fuel supply and return lines by prying out the push connect retention clevises on each end of each line. (See Figure 1). Open the fuel line retention clips on the fuel tank support and slide the lines out of the vehicle.

5. Remove the electrical wiring harness locator clip from the hole located between the tank supports and install the clip supplied (Item 2) in the hole.

6. Install the new fuel line assembly (Item 1), routing it over the midship fuel tank rear support and to the inboard side of the left frame rail. (See Figure 2).

7. Secure the lines to the left frame rail, using the clip (Item 2) supplied.

8. Secure the new fuel lines to the top of the midship fuel tank aft support using the tie straps supplies (Item 3).

9. Before raising the fuel tank, be sure that the electrical wiring, vapor vent lines, and fuel lines are positioned to have clearance to body sill and frame members. Clip, tape, or band them, if required, to stay clear of any Ambulance Manufacturer hardware which may exist.

10. Raise the fuel tank back into position, being careful not to pinch any vapor, fuel line, or wiring against body sills, frame brackets, or any other hardware that may be present.

11. Install the fuel tank support straps and tighten the strap nuts until 1.25 to 1.50 inches of threads are exposed.

12. Re-connect the fuel fill and fill vent hoses. Tighten the hose screw clamps to 3 to 4 N-m (27 to 35 in. lb.).

13. Connect the new fuel lines to the fuel tank selector valve and to the fuel sender.

14. Lower the vehicle.

15. After tank is secure, re-check wiring, vapor lines, and fuel lines for proper clearances and routings.

16. Refill the fuel tank.

WARNING: Before turning the key, make sure the parking brake has been set fully. On vehicles with automatic transmission, place the gearshift selector in P (PARK). DO NOT idle the vehicle in a closed area for any extended time unless the tailpipe is externally vented out of the area.

17. Reconnect the battery ground cable and start the engine. Check for fuel leaks while running alternately on both the midship and aft axle fuel tanks.
