Body Mount Heat Shield, Exhaust Hanger Information

FIGURE 1:

BODY MOUNT HEAT SHIELD INSTALLATION (1985-1/2 - 1987 VEHICLES ONLY)

NOTE: 1. Inspect the Number 2, Number 3, and Number 4 body mount on the right frame rail (See Figure 1). Replace them if damaged, before proceeding with the heat shield installation. Ambulances based on E350 Supervan may not have the Number 4 Body mounts.

FIGURE 1:

2. If the ambulance is already equipped with an equivalent or larger shield, omit this procedure.

1. Attach a body mount heat shield (Item 1) with a 7/16 inch nut (Item 2) to the Number 2, Number 3, and Number 4 body mounts (one shield is required for each body mount) on the right frame rail (See Figure 1). The Number 2 body mount is located just rearward of the transmission support member.

2. Torque each nut to 9 to 10 N-m (6 to 8 ft.lb.).

EXHAUST HANGER BRACKETS (1985-1/2 - 1987 VEHICLES ONLY)

1. Loosen the exhaust pipe from the Number 1 and 2 brackets (See Figure 2). Discard the clamp and U-bolt assemblies.

2. Remove the nuts and bolts that attach the Number 1 and 2 brackets to the frame. Discard the brackets, nuts, and bolts.

NOTE: In a few cases, it may be necessary to cut a hanger bracket to free it from the vehicle. If so, do not use a torch; use a cutting wheel (with a safety shield) or equivalent tool.

3. Attach exhaust hanger bracket Number 1 (Item 3) to the frame rail using two nuts and two bolts (Items 5 and 6) (See Figure 3) Do not tighten.

FIGURE 3:

4. Orient the middle link so that it is perpendicular to the frame rail. The inside link should point to the rear of the vehicle (See Figure 3).

5. Attach the exhaust pipe to the Number 1 bracket using a 2-1/2 inch clamp assembly (Item 8). Do not tighten.

FIGURE 4:

6. Attach exhaust hanger bracket Number 2 (Item 4) to the frame rail using two nuts and two bolts (Items 5 and 6) (See Figure 4). Do not tighten.

7. Orient the middle link so that the inboard pivot is 1/2 inch forward from the outboard pivot. The inside link should point to rear of the vehicle. (See Figure 4).

8. Attach exhaust pipe to the new Number 2 bracket using a clamp assembly (Item 7, 8, or 9) appropriate for the exhaust pipe diameter. Do not tighten.

NOTE: Only one pipe is supported on dual outlet exhaust systems using this kit.
9. Perform the following procedure to align the complete exhaust system.

a. Loosen all of the pipe connection clamps and the pipe support bracket clamps. Loosen the inlet pipe-to-exhaust manifold attaching nuts.

b. Work from the front and progressively align the exhaust system components and hangers to eliminate any interferences. Make sure that aligning tabs (if used) are fully engaged in their mating slots.

c. Then working from the rear forward, retighten the clamps to 25 to 34 N-m (18 to 25 ft.lb.) for the hanger clamps and 41 to 54 N-m (30 to 40 ft.lb.) for the sealing clamps. Finally, tighten the exhaust manifold to inlet pipe attaching nuts alternately and equally to 34 to 51 N-m (25 to 38 ft.lb.)
