II - Supplemental Vehicle Inspection: Overview
While the vehicle is already available for modification and inspection of conditions that could contribute to elevated underbody temperatures or excessive fuel system pressures, we are taking this opportunity to inspect for the following additional items which an operator may confuse with the issue of fuel explusion, such as fumes electrical fires, or driveability concerns.FIGURE 17:
NOT 21. Fuel Filler Housing in Body for Holes or Cracks in the Body that May Admit Fuel Vapors to Vehicle OK OK
[ ] [ ] Interior
Fuel filler housings in the body, similar to those shown in Figure 17, should be free of holes or cracks inadvertently caused by welding or drilling holes inside the vehicle during ambulance equipment installations. Holes or cracks can admit fuel vapors into the vehicle interior. Indicate the need for corrections on the inspection sheet and seal as required. Contact the FPSD District Office if you have any questions concerning needed corrections.
NOT 22. Rear Door Seals for Condition, Security, and Contact
OK OK
[ ] [ ] Door seals must be maintained to preserve sealing surfaces and be firmly retained to seals against the entry
of exhaust or fuel vent vapor as well as dust, noise, and water. Indicate the need for corrections on the
inspection sheet. Contact the FPSD District Office if you have any questions concerning needed corrections.
NOT 23. Underbody for Sealing of Openings and Cracks Which Could Allow Vapor to Enter the Vehicle Interior OK OK
[ ] [ ] All openings in the underbody which enter into the vehicle interior should be sealed. If openings in the
underbody are observed, determine if they are sealed from the interior. Possible methods for making the determination include blowing shop air into the opening or directing a bright light at the opening and observing if the air or light enters the vehicle interior. Indicate the need for corrections on the inspection sheet and seal as required. Contact the FPSD District Office if you have any questions concerning needed corrections.
NOT 24. Visible Vehicle Electrical Wiring (Both Ford and Added Wiring) for Condition, Rerouting, and Adequate
OK OK Retention
[ ] [ ] Due to the added heat typically encountered in ambulance service, visible wiring, especially in areas of high heat such as the engine compartment and underbody near the exhaust system, should be inspected for heat related damage. Wiring with insulation that has deteriorated due to excessive heat, over-capacity electrical loads, or contact with abrasive surfaces should be repaired or replaced with Motorcraft's cross-linked polyethylene high-temperature insulation wire, or equivalent. All visible wiring should be routed away from excessive heat and securely fastened. Indicate the need for corrections on the inspection sheet. Contact the FPSD District Office if you have any questions concerning needed corrections.
NOT 25. Carburetor Float Levels for Correct Height Adjustment OK OK
[ ] [ ] An improperly adjusted carburetor float level may result in poor driveability and increased exhaust system
temperatures. Float level checking and adjustment procedures are attached on page 18. If incorrect, note on inspections sheet and readjust.
FIGURE 18:
NOT 26. Front Suspension Bushing at the Rear of the Right Front Radius for Exhaust Heat Damage OK OK
[ ] [ ] The suspension bushing shown in Figure 18 has been found in some cases to have been damaged by
excessive exhaust heat from extended engine idle, requiring that the bushing be replaced. Note on the inspection sheet if damaged and in need of replacement.
27. Ford CARES System to Identify Any Outstanding Service Campaign Concerning the Vehicle
Enter the vehicle serial number into the Ford CARES data storage system, available at most Ford dealerships, to determine any outstanding service campaigns that have not been performed on the vehicle. Note on inspection sheet any/all service recalls (by number) which have not been performed on this specific vehicle and instruct the owner to contact his Ford dealer to schedule their implementation.
