CYLINDER HEAD BOLT TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS (6.9L DIESEL) - REVISED SERVICE INFORMATION
LIGHT TRUCKS 1983-85 F & E-SERIES

The cylinder head bolt torque specifications for replacement head gasket installations have been revised a number of times (TSB Article 83-9-9, 83-12-14, and 84-1-12), to service cylinder head sealing concerns.

As a result of design changes to the cylinder head gasket, all of the above TSB's are superseded, and the cylinder head sealing bolt torque specifications are as follows:

Figure 21:

Cylinder Head Bolt Torque Sequence

Step 1: 54 N-m (40 ft.lbs.)* Step 2: 88 N-m (65 ft.lbs.)* Step 3: 101 N-m (75 ft.lbs.)** Step 4: Repeat Step #3

*Torque bolts in numbered sequence shown in Figure 21 **Torque bolts in line sequence shown in Figure 21
NOTE: This procedure should be used only if a cylinder head gasket requires replacement. Retorquing cylinder head bolts (without gasket replacement) is not an authorized service, and will not fix a leaking gasket.

Either of the following service replacement gaskets may be used:

E4TZ-6051-D - Gasket Assembly includes 2 rubber grommets. Gasket Assembly and installation instructions are included in the parts package. Refer to pages 8 through 12, but DO NOT use torque specifications listed on page 12.

E5TZ-6051-C* - Gasket Assembly is one piece (the rubber grommets are pre-assembled to the gasket).

*Available in the Parts Distribution Centers after February 1, 1985.
