This TSB Article includes information on the installation of the magnetic pick-up into the holding tube, and also servicing action for a loose or missing engine timing quadrant holding tube:
INSTALLATION OF THE DYNAMIC ENGINE TIMING MAGNETIC PICK-UP
When installing the magnetic pick-up into the holding tube in the timing quadrant, the pick-up must be inserted until it contacts the vibration damper. If the end of the magnetic pick-up is not close enough to the vibration damper (in contact with damper or a maximum of .015 inch away from the vibration damper) no reading will be obtained. The snap ring located on the pick-up probe (five-eighths of an inch from the end) must be inside the tube of the timing quadrant. If the snap ring will not enter the holding tube, remove the snap ring and replace it with rubber "O" ring (0.239 I.D. x 0.040 cross section).
SERVICING ACTION FOR A LOOSE OR MISSING ENGINE TIMING QUADRANT HOLDING TUBE
1. In cases where the holding tube in the timing quadrant which serves as the receptacle for the magnetic pick-up is loose or breaks off, the tube can be re-installed and brazed in place.
Figure 14:
2. In cases where the holding tube is damaged or missing, the zero offset hole (0.375 inch diameter at TDC) may be used with the following procedure:
a. Wrap tape around the magnetic pick-up until it is a snug fit in the zero offset hole, (two layers of masking tape will be sufficient), see Figure 14.
b. Install the luminosity probe into #8 cylinder (driver's side rear) instead of #1 cylinder.
c. Set meter for minus 90~ (instead of minus 20~).
Meter readings with the meter set for minus 90~ and luminosity probe in #8 cylinder are identical to readings with the meter set for minus 20~ and luminosity probe in #1 cylinder.
