Program Description
June, 1987To: Ford, Ford Heavy Truck and Lincoln-Mercury Dealers
Subject:
Preliminary Announcement of Owner Notification Program M53 - Fuel/Exhaust/Cooling System Inspection and Modification Program for Ambulances Based on 1983 through 1987-Model Econoline E-350 Cutaway Chassis and Vans Equipped with 7.5L Engines
The letter included advises ambulance owners/operators that they will be contacted within the next several weeks concerning Owner Notification Program M53 that Ford Motor Company and leading ambulance manufacturers will be jointly conducting. The program provides for fuel/exhaust/cooling system inspections and modification on the involved vehicles.
Some of the subject vehicles may experience excessive fuel system pressure as the result of a variety of conditions, including use of high-volatility fuel in warm weather. This pressure may create the potential for expulsion of liquid fuel from the fuel filler pipe when the fuel filler cap is removed which, in the presence of an ignition source, can cause a fire.
The program is unusual because it is being conducted jointly with leading ambulance manufacturers; for that reason it is being done only at dealerships that have agreed to participate, are equipped to do so and have been specially trained to perform the inspections covered by the program. Questions on participation and/or training should be directed to your FPSD District Office.
We ask that you inform any ambulance owners/operators contacting your dealership to follow the suggestions contained in the letter. Other questions or reports of difficulties should be directed to your District Office until you receive further information on this program within the next several weeks.
Your efforts will help assure continued owner/operator satisfaction with ambulances based on Econoline E-350 cutaway chassis and vans.
